A card arrived from a local friend this morning with encouraging thoughts and prayers in it. It made all the difference to me to know there are people who care and are supportive.

I can only imagine how anxiety producing this must be. Especially with the history you have of a previous medical problem.

Of course, I will weigh in on the medical aspect. :) They do use drugs that are very short acting. You will be sedated and not be aware and when they stop the medication and perhaps even use a reversal agent, you will wake rather quickly. Years ago they used barbiturates that took hours to recover from.

Also, there are high standards for the certification of the centers that do these procedures in the States.

Still, I know that giving up the control is hard. Having things done TO you. Have they told you what to expect? An IV, heart monitor, watching oxygenation and having supplemental oxygen administered? Are you the type that likes to know ahead of time? Or is it easier to NOT know?

ISH, thanks for sharing. I'm an x-nurse with PTSD from child abuse and from my nursing days. I've assisted with the procedure and I know what is going to happen. I don't know if that is worse or not.

I have a very good imagination which leaves me thinking all kinds of negative stuff but it is the doctors and nurses who could be my biggest trigger. Do I know them? (I'd rather not!). Will they be aggressive and/or accusing? (The last consultant I saw was).

In the UK it will be done on the NHS which will reduce my choices somewhat and I just have to be strong enough to stand up to my own fears, face it and push through. It will be over very quickly and the drug of choice is a fast acting one. Once I'm under I'll be OK unless I dram and wake disorientated or dissociated. :eek: They will have all the monitoring equipment 'et al' so I'm sure it will be OK.

I'm the sort that needs to know everything beforehand. When I had to have an MRI scan I studied up on how the scanner works and the procedure they would use before I went. It helped tremendously.
