Group therapy

Hi,

Tomorrow I have an assessment for group therapy. I do one-to-one Therapy with my T every Wednesday but she recommended looking at other resources too so we decided I would think about Group Therapy to meet others in similar situations.

The GT does not start for a few weeks but they want to meet me tomorrow to see if I am suitable.

I have no idea what to expect. Do you talk about your individual traumas? Do you have to respond and participate? Do you know the topics before hand? Once you sign up must you commit to all sessions and how long does it generally go on for? I will continue to see my Therapist weekly for our one-to-one so I wonder if it'll be too much?

I am currently engaging with law enforcement also to report a specific trauma so am uneasy emotionally and am afraid I wont be able for another form of talking and bringing up all my issues!

It all depends on the group therapist. These are all great questions to ask when you see them tomorrow.

I’ve found group therapy to be very helpful and not too much.

Yes, every therapist may do group therapy differently. You should definitely ask those questions in group, as the other poster suggested.

I cannot say enough how much I got out of group therapy. Although the reasons that brought us there sucked donkey balls, I have made some lifetime friends.

I say give it a try.

You shouldn’t have to commit until you’ve been a few times (IMHO) as you won’t know if the group is a good fit until you’ve been a few times.

And yes, you might make good friends! I went to PHP (think: 6 hours a day of group therapy) and I walked away with 6 friends.
