I was just reading a blog post by a psychiatrist (this blog post is of a satire nature, before people jump up and down) outlining all the ways one could possibly monitor for mental illness to remove guns from those who go and perform mass killings or such.

I found it highly amusing, as it would pretty much mean the entire world... which maybe is the point. Why have guns, period! If nobody had guns, we would be one less method of easily killing one another.

I'm told by a good authority (Psychiatrist and writer Anthony Daniels) that if you divide the annual frequencies of occurance listed for all entries in the DSM by the total American population, you get the mythical aggregated average American suffering two point something disorders each year...

surely the DSM is conservative on this estimate?

Any description of normality, what it might look like or how frequently it might be found, is conspicuous by its absence from the DSM.

strange that.

Just reading a recent study... the ICD is considered much worse, far broader tolerances and less data for physicians to base diagnosis with accuracy.

That piece was hysterical. The whole blog is pretty interesting, actually.
@anthony, adding an addendum to your addendum - the most recent data for the US indicates that firearms are the most common method chosen - 51.6%

Geez... California and Texas are right up there for numbers. I wonder what the demographics are per capita... which one wins then?

If I'm understanding all this correctly, the rankings in the other document matter more than the numbers. The slightly silly but pretty clear chart (above) does the rates per 100,000 population. I'm both surprised and not surprised that the mountain states have the highest rates. According to the website proper, those states have held the highest rates consistently since 2002.
The gun culture out there is also a reality of daily life; access to a firearm would likely be very, very easy to have.

WHO recently released that someone attempts a suicide every three seconds and someone succeeds every forty seconds. That is the global statistics.

Lmao... That's piss funny!

I think my favorite bit is here : "The pharmacists will have a dedicated line."

Followed closely by : "Plus, do we really want people who are sleep deprived to be handling guns? They can be very cranky. "

For suicide? I guess only once each.
I must admit... pretty funny.

I still do wonder though... as some states may look low, but if the total for the state is small compared to another, maybe their figure is quite significant. I like per capita figures... though still chuckling a little from the humour in that response. Nice.
