Has Anyone Upped Meds Around Their Period?

My BF is trying to tell me to 'take an extra nimble' of my meds a week or so before my period.

I agree, my symptoms get worse during this time. I have extreme moods swings and go to that very dark place.

I'm seeing my psyche doc in January to ask about this.

Being trained in science, I know that the meds I'm on need to be kept at constant levels in my blood stream. I'm on Seroquel (100 mg) and Wellbutrin (100 mg). I seem to be pretty stable most of the month, then whammo............

Increasing a bit just at the time of my period would seem to put extra stress on my body as it adjusts to the new dose every month then it's taken away.

My intuition tells me this isn't an option. He disagrees. I'll see what the doc says, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has tried this and how did it work for you?

I agree with your thinking..especially if it is working most of the time. It doesn't work that way. I think you would need a prn dose..or a take as needed dose of something. Like ativan or valium, if you don't have addiction issues. Maybe just being more conscious of it will help and you need to say to yourself..do I want to numb myself or ok..I am not going to go to that dark place. I am all about this new way of thinking and being drug free only because I am living well drug free. I accept my good days and look forward to them, I know there are more of them now. I accept that I am going to have the "crazies" before more period and I sure do. PMS and PTSD really get my moods and thoughts spinning but I really feel (only because I am currently succeeding in doing it )that changing your thought processes will really help. Just my humble opinion. take it for what it is worth but I am managing with no psych drugs at all now, I know it can be done.

I agree that perhaps something you could "add" in on "those" days would be better. Know your not the only one - who has this problem though, during my period is one of the few times I'm able to cry and then anything will turn on the water-works. My moods are up and down and all over the place.

One thought (not sure of your age or medical history - not an option for me but may be for you) is looking into constant birth control.

I'm 44. I haven't been on the pill in a very long time. I don't smoke, so that's good.
Hum.......perhaps I'll consider it.

Tlight,

There is something else to consider in the equation also...Menopause..... I know, you are only 44, but women start losing Estrogen in their 30's.....My first hot flash was at 41, and by my mid 40's I was a raving lunatic with menopausal symptoms......

I thought the mood swings were bad, till I started having night sweats, and losing sleep. Add that to the higher anxiety attacks, the panic attacks, add in some random bouts with agoraphobia, stir all together with PTSD and you have....a women in crisis IMO!!!!!!!!

I would look into having your GP, check your hormonal levels to see where you stand with this approaching issue....

I used to be a mess at that time of the month also.......

I am soooooooooooooooo glad that part of my life is over....Whoopie!!!!!!!

Hi TLight

I have a similar issue though mine is primarily caused by having PCOS (a fertility issue that affects hormones). My symptoms worsen so bad around that time. The only thing that did help at one point was Valium (as Pandora suggested) but I just had to be mindful to only take it at the worst points...

I'm on it.........my mood swings are so bad I get suicidal again, and that scares me.

I'll take a Klonopin and just try to sleep through it. Thanks guys...

Moon issues relate to a diet imbalance and a need for more rest/hydration etc... There is also the hormones to think about - the extra shot of testosterone doesn't help either. When you see your doc, be honest about what kind of foods you eat and whether you're doing the balanced food groups thang and if you exercise regularly.

It's really cool that we can discuss these female things here. Menopause - eeesh, I'll be headed up that stream soon too.

TLight, I don't know if this thread is ancient for you already, but thought I would add my two bits.

My hormonal mood swings practically stopped, when I started using Nuvaring. I had tried those hormonal birth control patches (Evra?) before Nuvaring, but unfortunately I developed an allergy (got a really nasty rash under the patch - ouch) and had to discontinue. Your metabolism, needs and preferences will of course vary.

I'm on the pill now. So we will see how that goes. My gyny gave me the option of an IUD, but I don't like the pain associated with the insertion.

I'll keep everyone posted on how the pill helps.

Is nuvaring an IUD?
