I agree with AdamAnt. Right now, online dating service here in Quebec is the way to go for people our age while pubs, bars, bistros are crowded by young ones in their teens or 20's (you are considered an adult at 18 years age in this province i.e.: drinking is legal and adult court procedures apply for instance). We have two serious online dating services that are free for women but with monthly cost for men. Both have the mechanism to report predators, member abuse or nonsense. A little bit like this forum, these sites can give warnings to crocodile members, restrict them or banned them altogether. Identity is protected unless under investigation by police with a court order. Sites will then be obliged to reveal your identity.
Just ensure your dating site has these mechanism in place. And by all means, take advantage of their promos and pay as little as you can. Also be as honest as you can on your profile and what you are looking for: love? or friendship? for instance.
I met Rick in 2007, my severe combat PTSD partner, on an online dating site called Québec Rencontre. He was looking for a serious relationship (as stated on his profile). I am sooooooo glad he was ready for a serious relationship for I do not think I would have appreciated getting serious with him only to be dropped after 6 months or a year because of his PTSD symptoms. I, on the other hand, was serious about what I wanted. Just did not know I would fall for this guy and become a carer. Glad I am for I love him deeply and so does he. Does not say it but shows it everyday.
Just my 2 cents guys
