How many of you out there have healed (after years of suffering) without any therapy at all. If so, how?

Not me!

I am not sure that you can do it without some sort of therapy. I am not saying you necessarily need a therapist ( although I believe this makes it quicker and easier) but I think there are some people who have done quite well from online programmes and self-help books. These are still a form of therapy although self- directed.

I know getting therapy is not easy for many people but, the short cuts turn out to be not-so-short!

What type of therapy do you recommend? Do you know of any programs or self help books that you'd recommend? Do you have experience with the "not-so-short" short cuts?

I've had great success with EMDR, but am thinking about receiving long term care so that it doesn't resurface. I haven't had any issues, but want to make sure I never do.

I'm very torn and hope I can get some advice.

Thank you for your help.

I haven't healed without therapy, that would have been impossible I think. Actually, I would say the same as Lucycat, I doubt that PTSD (Complex PTSD for my part) can be healed without any therapy at all... unless you have at least one deep, true, compassionate and PATIENT friend, which is very rare I think. And even like that, I don't know...

But on the other hand, I KNOW that one can really heal from PTSD, because that is luckily what happens to me

As I was living in Central America in 2012 when the illness burst out, in a country where there was no psychotherapist at all, nor psychiatrist, a therapy done through Skype saved my life. You can google "The Journey" by Brandon Bays, that is the therapy I used that fitted me. And also "The Work" by Byron Katie helped me at the time, to work out thoughts and beliefs.

For me The Journey has been a huge "not-so-short" short cut therapy, as in only one year I solved 100% of my sexual abuses. Work has still to be done with my 25+ years of verbal/emotional abuse, although it is in good way. But be aware that this Journey therapy requires to be ready to face right in the eyes whatever comes out, and it can be very very tough at the moment. Even now I don't know how I got the courage to face it. Well, I suppose that it was a life or death question for me, so I had no real choice if I wanted to survive...

Actually, now I am so enthusiastic about the Journey technic that I plan to finish next year the Practitionner Programe that I started this year. I also started last September psychology studies at university in France :)

Apart from all that, I have to admit that this PTSD forum helped/is helping me also a lot. You can go here and there to the chat part and share nice moments with almost always very understanding people who know very well what is PTSD :)

I wish you the so very best Needhelpnowpls, warm feelings from France :)

For me I have had EMDR and that is what I would recommend. I had been receiving therapy for 3 years, and only stopped a couple of months ago. Like you, Needhelpnowpls, I hope that nothing comes back. I am not sure anything can guarantee that for ever. It is a matter of 'I am well' - for now.

Amcen, I have just started studying psychology too. I am doing a degree with the Open University in the UK. I find the whole topic fascinating, and it really is down to my therapist who inspired me to apply. I really believe that having an understanding of how your brain affects your mind and your entire physical body makes such a difference to the symptoms of CPTSD. Just understanding reduces the fear factor greatly.

I'm afraid I'm not very clear about what you feel you need. From your username it sounds urgent, but from this and another post I saw you seem to be saying you're fine since having EMDR. Do you think the EMDR has only buried things that might resurface at any time? Do you have reasons for thinking that?

I don't really understand the concept of having long term care as a sort of preventative measure. Usually, therapy or self help is in reaction to symptoms and manifestations. If those aren't present, how are you perceiving treatment, whether self-help or with a therapist? How could you know whether something is effective, if it's not in response to anything? What would you be treating, exactly?

If you have something troubling you at the moment then that's what you would need to seek help for. If nothing is troubling you at the moment, I'm confused by what it is you want to heal now, with or without therapy.

I haven't had access to therapy, or counseling, so, self help is the only option. And I don't seem to be doing so well. Most self help stuff on the net, and this site are therapy, or counseling based, or come from books and sales. I don't have access to buying stuff on line, or skype, so, on my own, as usual. What have you done, in terms of self treatment, that has worked for you?

Google it

I don't know if you have seen that website but it has ALOT to offer. As a veteran you have 100% medical coverage and can see a therapist, or any medical doctor. If you cant drive, they offer transportation as well as online/telephone therapy. As a veteran, you shouldn't be going without, if you want the help. It's available, you just need to grab it.
