Hi everyone,

I am so glad I found you. I have been experiencing PTSD and OCD thoughts in my relationships now for five years and I'm looking for any kind of guidance and advice that can help me with my trust issues. I was diagnosed roughly a year and half ago but from reviewing past experience it is clear that this has been happening since an incredibly emotionally, physically and sexually abusive previous relationship. I also have sexual abuse, neglect and emotional abuse from my childhood.

I have been with my current partner for almost six months now and it has been a very difficult but also a very rewarding experience, he is a very supportive and loving man however it is still difficult for me to trust in him. I am mainly fixated on potential remaining feelings he may have for his ex, anxiety around the use of social media and text messaging. I also find it hard to believe that he is loyal, trustworthy and genuine at times. Through attending therapy I have been able to gain perspective on my thought patterns, how to learn to cope with them and how to communicate my fears with my partner. My partner is very open to communication, very open to learning and understanding and is very reassuring about his feelings towards me and towards us. However, this has not made it any less difficult at times when the fear/anxiety/obsessive thoughts can take over.

I'm not sure how much detail I should provide in regards to my situation however I would love to hear from people who have experienced similar feelings and how they cope, have grown stronger or managed to overcome their PTSD, even if only partially. It would also be great to hear from partners who have been with those suffering PTSD and how they found ways to deal with these issues.

Many thanks
Best Wishes
Kat

meerkat123,

I am in a relationship with a woman with PTSD and trust issues. One thing I can say that helps is when she tells me specific things that trigger the trust issue and ways to avoid it. Communication is the key, it is also important to think of ways that your partner can demonstrate that he is worthy of your trust.

He may not realize some of the things he does that might trigger the trust issues in you, if you point them out, he can either avoid doing them or modify his behavior. It sounds like he wants to make it, which is a good thing.
