Soceity makes you feel like you need to pay a fancy therapist to fix you.

It's worth noting that these forums have an explicit view that "A therapist is invaluable in helping you fix yourself."

If you have PTSD, then you're afraid of your own thoughts. It's very very difficult to work through those fears without help. These forums are a place where we do what we can, but for the difficult stuff, we tend to say "Have you talked to your therapist?"

If you can't afford one, or can't find a good one, then that's an unfortunate reality for a lot of people that is acknowledged. But suggesting that therapists in general are not useful (which is how I read your comment) is something that experienced members of this community will be quick to correct.

I did not mean to say therapists are not useful If I was rich of course I would have a therapist to. My reality is that my body and nervous system has been really damaged by the years of stress. Right now I prefer to choose to spend what money I have available on things which are making my body stronger so I have the energy to cope with day to day life because I was really going under due to my weakned physical condition . By making my body stronger I am getting on top of things and my mind is feeling stronger as a result . I hope I can relinquish this at some point and then I can choose to spend my available cash on mind based therapy. Its important to remember though that body based therapy also has the ability to help process trauma . Everyones case is a bit different though I would never say my way is the best way for everyone.

Exactly. You sound like you understand that not everyone can afford therapy. In my situation I have bills, kids, and other expenses to take care of. That is what keeps me healthy too. I know therapy would too. Yes it helps but not everyone can afford it. Especially me.

Thinking about acupuncture myself. Have had bad luck with therapist. But l live in an area with excellent practitioners of acupuncture.

Coming to this site help me understand why my therapist seemed to not be helpful. Lol.

In the U.K., depending on where you are, you should be able to get a good therapist for around £40-£60 per session. More than that and you're generally paying for nice offices, staff and infrastructure rather than the therapy itself. If those are important to you then by all means pay a bit more but perfectly good therapists are available for a reasonable rate.

I'd look for qualifications - minimum of a Post Grad diploma, some universities are better than others but that doesn't mean the therapist is good, just that their training was good. Look for membership/registration of a professional body BACP/UKCP/COSCA. They all have slightly different registration and or accreditation requirements but the important but is they mean your therapist works to a code of ethics with an external complaint process. They all have "find a therapist" sections where you can search for someone but if you Google "counselling directory" you'll find a website who check therapists credentials before they join.

After that, it's about checking their areas of interest, experience and expertise, and seeing whether you get on/can relate to each other. Some of that you'll get by speaking to them by phone but meeting and getting to know each other in your first session will help. If they push you to quickly talk about your trauma in detail, think you'll be done in x number of sessions (or say you'll be there forever) or are unclear about how they work I'd give them a wide berth.
