Isn't it sad we're all out there, dealing with our shit, same stuff for all of us but just packaged differently, and all feeling desperate and alone. If only there was a magic place where the lost children could all hold hands and heal...... I guess this website is the next best thing.
Good to hear from you CraftyCath. XX

Helliepig and Cath, thanks so much, gosh, even this is making me cry and I haven't even left the house yet! Bring on that magic place of safety for the children who never had such a place. Hoping for some peace for all of us today, or tonight, wherever you are in the world.

Been thinking about my journey through all this stuff a lot, because this is a good place to write stuff down and get your thoughts down, and because reading where other people are in their journey has made me very reflective!
I can't believe I've only been on this site just over a week, I can't imagine what I did those lonely days before I had you guys to share with. I avoided joining for ages, I guess I wasn't ready, so joining in itself is a sign of forward movement. What I hadn't expected was such warmth and connection and empathy. I just didn't realise so many people would share my innermost thoughts and experiences and be so ready to share theirs.

Discovering I was abused was actually a wierd thing, because I would have sworn blind I wasn't. In fact early on I bought a book about DID which was a collection of writings. One lady wrote about how she couldn't understand why she was dissociative, she was "only" ignored, ridiculed, abandoned and bullied; she related a story she'd read about a 2 year old boy being lost in a forest for 2 days, and the unimaginable desperate feelings he must have had, and related her own experience and dissociation to feeling like that. I thought, I'm with you lady, all these other people writing about their abuse and torment, and she and I both felt like pretenders. What's wrong with us so that we react with dissociation?
.......................I'll come back to the question of "only" ridicule, abandonment etc a bit later.

Even though my amnesia for the actual detail was total, a part of me knew there was "something" back there. All through the therapy i'd had,i'd felt it, even though the therapists I saw never seem to want to look back at that time! Iremember my first EMDR therapist, an expert in his own field of acute PTSD but actually not great at developmental stuf,f pretty much saying, well I think that's it now, ie you're sorted. Except I didn't feel sorted.

And there was a whisper in my head asking, did grandma abuse me? At the time I thought I was just searching for am answer, embracing a cliche.

What amazes me now is that I had no concious concept of what abuse does to a child's spirit, to her whole relationship with the world. I have worked with people who have disclosed abuse, and have seen how distressing that is for them, and understand it's a terrible thing - everyone knows it's a terrible thing - but I had no idea exactly how. And how crazy is that, someone who has been abused has no idea how badly they have been hurt by it.

My "hurt" to me was shame, inadequacy, wierd worlds I inhabited, issues I had that noone else had, struggles that I put down to "my stuff". It never occured to me to consider that perhaps there was a REASON for all this - and NOT that I was fundamentally wierd and inadequate. Part of me knew I wasn't - but I discounted that part. The bad bit HAD to be right.

And when I was searching to find any shred of memory that I had been abused I felt guilty for trying to find something to explain my inadequacy. I was scared, not of what I might find, as at this point it was still behing sealed doors, that I might not find anything. That there was no way out of the awful struggles I had. That this was me, and my life. That I really was inadequate, shameful, wierd.
That was frightening beyond reason.

The abusers teach us to label our pain and humiliation as shame and badness. Why shame? Well, imagine a little girl taking a beautiful flower to her dad, and have him turn round and hit her and tell he's she a bad girl, (that is just a random, made up, crazy example, but lots of abuse is just as crazy and random) she will feel so humiliated and angry and afriad and confused and ashamed and knocked back. She will blame herself and feel ashamed for something awful she must have done. If it happens enough, she concludes SHE is shameful. It never occurs to her that her abuser is mad, unhinged, evil, crazy, illogical. He is big, she is small and young, and noone tells her differently

Parts of ourselves then take on that role and continue to abuse ourselves with that same theme...you are useless, you are bad....... And we listen to it because it's all we've ever known. And, oddly enough, the shame we feel stops us going any further down - stops us from feeling the pain, the abandonment, the craziness, the fear, the life threatening terror. ( "only humiliation, abandonment, and fear") so, awful though the shame is, it protects the tiny tot from having toto ever get near the true horror of what it REALLY felt like.

That is what abuse does to a child's spirit. And a child's world. And lays lies and traps to make the healing so difficult

If anyone is reading this, and relates to any of this, all i can say is, the part of you that KNOWS you are more than your pain, listen to it, never mind how much the other parts of you pull you to pieces and make you doubt yourself.

All your parts are there for a reason, and however harsh and shameful they are, they are there for a reason. With time you will see it.

Hi Helliepig

I'm not convinced that EMDR is helping as it is just bringing up so many memories that I don't know what to do with, and is just over-whelming! I told my therapist that I needed extra support immediately after and she just said that I need to sit with the feelings:( Is that normal??

R
Is EMDR the immersion therapy?

As far as I am concerned it is dangerous to me.

If you need extra support immediately then you need extra support immediately.

You can't just sit with the feelings! If you could do that then you would never split off from them. I don't know the context that the "sitting with your feelings" comment was made in but to me it is a worry and I would be looking for another T that has a bit more experience and nouse with the whole process.

What is your support network like? Are you safe? Is your life stable in other areas? Do you have friends that understand and support you? Are you in real time - going to groups where you get some feedback and validation? Have you got a life set up that contains you? If you don't then that is totally inappropriate in my totally non expert opinion.

I feel so lonely and ashamed of my past, that i'm frightened of people thinking bad of me.

People on the whole, won't think badly of you. They will feel badly for you and sad about your experiences. Some people might not be able to cope with what happened to you. That doesn't mean they think badly of you, it is just that it breaks their hearts and makes their hearts throb with sadness and horror. You have to be careful not to interpret that they have bad feelings about you. It is just they have bad feelings about how awful what you lived through is and how they wish they can fix it or make you better. It is hard to be helpless. It is hard to not really be able to do things.

Remember that people are so caught up in their own lives and the daily information overload of our times and all the fear that is circulating and thus most people don't think about other people that much at all. Sad but true. Many, many people are just trying to get through the day.

Be kind to your self and be kind to those that have strong emotional reactions to your past. That is being human and concerned.

Of course it goes without saying that you need to be very choosy, selective and particular about who you tell in the first place.

You deserve compassion,

Dissociation is wierd and scary and really hard to describe. I would advise getting to know as much as possible about it - not the formal descriptions, but the tiny details the experienced trauma therapists write about. I often read articles and find one or two phrases that hit home, that describe exactly some wierd thought or belief I have and they would explain it. I spent days frantically searching to hear someone else talk about the neurological type dissociative symptoms I had, which were hellish - I now understand those to be symptoms from the baby ( when trauma is so overwhelming it causes neurological symptoms in the immature nervous system) People need to write lots about what it is like, because there is not enough out there for sufferers to relate to.

But the bottom line is, dissociation iISsplit in the personality, it is called "structural" because it is hard wired. It's bit like having a really really tall wall between parts of yourself, you have no inkling the other part is there. The wall has to come down but then you have to resolve the shocking clash between two disparate parts of yourself. Dissociation is so wierd and painful , the healing almost HAS to be untterly weird, painful and frightening also order for such a massive change to occur in your brain, if you see what I mean. And you have to FEEL it in your body, because that is where trauma is stored. Thinking is a waste of time.

So next time you feel overwhelmed, weird and frightened, take comfort in the fact that something big is happening, all in the right direction XX

I guess that would not work for me. I am doing a bit each day and it does feel better to let stuff out. But I could never deal with the complete overwhelm that you are talking about. You are very brave. My central nervous system and psyche could not stand that. I am feeling a lot and it is hard but not in the full on way you are describing. Or maybe I am doing what you are doing but just express it differently. That could be it.

The best of luck to you.

Hi Ms Spock,
I'm not suggesting it has to feel that hard in therapy, or advocating it should be that hard, i was just explaining a reason if why sometimes it might do, so if someone feels overwhelmed they might have some handle about why it feels so hard. PS EMDR is not immersion therapy, and sitting with feelings in that context is different from just sitting with them, period for the sake of it, that on its own doesn't do it.

I am writing a lot of posts about my journey through therapy because the last two years of therapy have been hard, the hardest thing I've ever done, and at times hellish. Like any other big life changing event you need to keep talking about it until it's made sense to you and assimilated, and I'm also trying to piece together all the things that have happened, making sense of who I am becoming and where I've been.

I spent years in therapy not making any real progress because nothing was strong enough to push me through into the core stuff. If we went near it, instead of recognising we were finally getting there, I took it as a sign of impending breakdown or insanity, and backed off. For much of it, I don't think I was ready to cope with it, but I do feel sad at all those years of trying, all that effort and dedication, all the time it was like looking under the streetlamp for something I'd dropped over the other side of the road road, just cos it was easier there to see under the light!!

I honestly believe that without EMDR and my amazing therapist, I wouldn't ever have been able to get at it, let alone so far through it, I really do.

And ok, so it's been the hardest thing I've ever had to do, and at times hellish, but if that's what it takes to heal, bring it on.....

.................................I don't plan to say "I'm dissociative" for ever.
