Horrendous Dream.

Okay, this was a nasty one and I have no idea where it came from. Dreams about war and fire are pretty normal for me and don't really scare me, but this was something different.
I need to type it out to get my head straight, but if you read this, be warned it is very strange and pretty disturbing.

In my dream I was part of a team responding to some sort of catastrophe. It was somewhere sandy, by the sea. There was a small town of squat little concrete houses with flat roofs and something terrible had happened there, though I don't know what.
I was wearing something that seemed to be halfway between military CBRN gear and a fire service BA set. I had a weapon, but it was slung behind me and I was carrying tools.
I was exploring one house which was pretty badly smoke damaged and had that weird vibe that buildings get when they used to be full of life but aren't now and never will be again. The furniture was smashed, the plaster was crumbling and the floor was covered in dirt. The house was dead.
I knew there was nobody alive downstairs, so I went upstairs and went into a small room at the top of the stairs. It was completely dark inside but suddenly a little girl's voice shouted at me to look out for the rat and pretty much immediately I was attacked by a large creature that I couldn't see. There then followed a horrendous struggle in pitch blackness until the little girl's voice shouted that the rat was stuck in something and to hit it with my spade, which I did.
At that point something happened and the room filled with dim, brownish sunlight- I think part of the roof had given way- and I saw the 'rat'; a monstrous thing about as large as a medium-sized dog with milky eyes that seemed to glow with a terrible blue light now that the sun shone on them. It was stuffed between the wall and an item of furniture, its spine snapped and my spade embedded in its chest.
Then I realised that the room was a nursery and the item of furniture was a cot. I looked in it and saw that anything the initial catastrophe hadn't accomplished, the rats certainly had.
So I staggered around the room a bit, trying to pull my mask off in a panic, when I spotted the feet of a little girl poking out from under a dresser, where she had presumably been hiding during the fight.
I could hear another of my team coming up the stairs, asking if I'd found anything, and I called back that we might have a survivor.
I looked under the dresser to reassure her and there were just two little pink shoes and a pile of yellow bones. At that point I started laughing manically. I heard my colleague say something about a 'nobel prize for hitting things with spades' and I turned to him holding the shoes. He started running to catch me as I just toppled over forward.
That's when I woke up.
Luckily I didn't wake my wife and daughter by screaming as I'd gone some way beyond screaming at that point and could barely breathe.
Thus, I am sitting here, typing this.

hmmm, your dreams sound like mine in terms of clarity and intensity. I'm not good at figuring out the subtext but is the dreaming better or is this a repeat scenario?

I used to dream a lot about places I knew, all shattered and burning, the sky all filled with smoke. In these dreams I was always getting ready to make a last stand against some enemy that I never saw.

Lately, though, I've mostly dreamed about fire and trying to rescue people. I'm really not sure where this particular dream came from.
