How Do You Deal With Difficult People

In a nutshell: my landlord is an asshole and a liar. Ever since I moved in she's accused me of being a problem tenant. She yelled at me for telling her that I couldn't get the prongs into the outlets, asking how much oil the tank held and when was the last time it was serviced.

She told me, "you're a miserable person". That I had been there for three weeks and every week there's a problem. So, now I'm scared to say anything.

The toilet continues to "run" and she was mad because the inspector (subsidized housing) came out and wrote in his COMMENTS that toilet need to be checked. It wasn't a violation, just in the comments. She had a fit and complained she'd have to higher a plumber to come out and fix it. I called the inspector and told him it wasn't running, that I adjusted the chain. It still runs.

The bigger issue is that the tenant upstairs smokes pot and I've smelt in the hallway on 4 different occasions and in the back stairwell also.

I talked to his mother and she said that he smokes it like crazy and that the landlord said it was ok for him to do it as long as he blew it out the window.

This is NOT okay with me. I have a 12 y/o and don't want her around that sh*t. I called her and told her that the hallway wreaked and she acted like she had no idea what I was talking about. And even got pissy and said, "you're acting like I'm okay with this, I have a daughter too". She said she would call him.

I called his mother back and told her she denied knowing anything about it. She said she's full of sh*t because she was up there when they were talking about it, she remembers cuz they were standing in the kitchen.

I didn't tell my landlord what his mother said cuz I didn't want to throw her under the bus but this is bullsh*t.

The next time I smell it in the hallway I'm calling the cops. I know landlord will just be pissed off about that but this is NOT okay with me.

Anyone encounter this kind of situation? Someone who lies constantly? What do you do? How do you handle it?

Ish, Heather. I'm so sorry you and your daughter are in this nasty living situation. You could call the police next time you smell it. But do you think your landlord would kick you out if you did? That is something to think about. If I were you and I wanted to call the police, I would have a plan on somewhere else to live, just in case.

@hodge She can't kick me out. I have a lease and make sure I pay my part of the rent every month, ON TIME. So, she can't say sh*t.

Besides, if I smell it again the police said to call and I will tell landlord that obviously her little talk didn't cut it. I have every right to keep my kid away from that crap and the cops agreed.

Thank you for your concern.

I can't off the top of my head remember what it's called, hopefully someone will know.

I am referring to having a way to prove that a payment has been made at a specific time, more importantly, before a specific time. So you can prove that you're making your lease payments and all other payments which could be actionable by the landlord to have you evicted.

Take a bit of time, think up anything you think the landlord could use against you, and make sure to cover your butt.

Then...
Have at her with both barrels! (Figuratively of course. :angelic:)

@hodge I pay everything with a money order and I keep the stub. Plus she gives me a written receipt. So, there's no way she can say I'm delinquent, I have proof.

If it gets really bad I can also call my worker at the housing department and see what she says.

Thanks for your replies.

Soley on the subject of your dope smoking neighbour.

What actual harm is this person doing to you or your daughter?

Sure, there is a bit of paper with writing on it that says he is not allowed to smoke dope
Just as there were once bits of paper saying that drinking wine or beer was forbidden, that voting was not allowed if you were female, that divorce wasn't allowed, And that you had to turn in fugitive slaves...

He isn't hurting you or your daughter, there's a very good chance that the cops Will physically hurt him, and that he'll get some of his money or property taken from him, and a pile of distress too.

You wouldn't beat him, steal from him or terrorise him yourself - calling cops in to do those things to him for you might be "legal" but hey, in different times and places was sicking storm troopers onto Jews, or patrollers onto escaped slaves.

Ah yes, money order. That's what I was thinking of.

I just don't understand why this landlord (and many others like her) have such a hostile reaction to maintenance. The toilet for example, is her problem. :banghead:

Not to mention the fact that procrastinating on little things like this will eventually become expensive fixes. If the toilet should end up in a state of disrepair that is no longer useable, she will then be forced to deal with immediately. Murphy's law dictates that a toilet will often break on a statutory holiday, or some other inconvenient time.

I guess if she really wants to risk having to spend a minimum of $100 dollars an hour, not counting parts and labour, for an emergency call to a plumber. If thats how she wants to waste it...

I don't even know if you can get those anymore, though.
I was wondering the same thing. Can't remember the last time I saw anyone use a cheque for anything other than setting up a direct deposit from an employer.

@Anarchy oh and by the way I did a little research:

Smoke from marijuana contains a complex chemical mixture, which may be dangerous. A study in 2008 showed that marijuana smoke contains many of the same cancer-causing chemicals as tobacco smoke. Certain chemicals, including cyanide and ammonia, are significantly higher in marijuana smoke compared to cigarette smoke. Parents should take the same caution with marijuana smoke as they do with tobacco smoke.
