Every time I have to speak to an insurance guy or get a letter regarding the accident, my heart sinks so low in my chest and I feel like I can't breathe. Now I'm supposed to show up to a hearing for failing to file papers with the DMV and no one told me I had to? I thought I had I just wanna hide away from everyone until this all passes.

Can you ask for assistance filling that in?

People don't know what to put in which column all the damned time, it wouldn't be the first time someone asked them, even if for different reasons, and that's what they're there for, to be helpful if you have to get this stuff filled.

The paperwork, I actually have my parents helping me out with (which I could not imagine doing this without them). It's the parts that require me personally that give me great anxiety (having to call insurance company to tell my side of the story, having to show up myself to the hearing).

Is there any way to write them a letter or email instead? You should have control over the communication method I would hope?

I had to speak to mine every week, having to tell them about bodily functions and how my legs were doing. "If the crash doesn't kill you, the paperwork will" I always thought. Just try to have a main document somewhere with everything in it, it's far less emotional to copy and paste.

I hope that helps.

It may not be an option for you but I hired a lawyer to help me handle all the paperwork. The day after the accident my insurance agent called me and asked for my account of the accident and I immediately felt my chest tighten and needed help. A family member referred me to an attorney who was able to recommend a phenomenal lawyer in my area. That lawyer handled EVERYTHING for me. Every bit of paperwork required by the DMV, both insurance companies, the bank my car loan was through, the emergency room visit, the surgery to repair my arm and the PT I had to do. I did have to sit down with the lawyer and recount the accident but it was only once and he was very reassuring about it. After that every bit of communication about the accident was fielded by my lawyer. If I received a bill, a form, or any document related to the accident, my insurance or my injuries I scanned it and emailed it to my lawyer and never had to worry about it again.

If you can hire a lawyer I definitely recommend it. It removes all the weight of paperwork and the related stress from your shoulders and you'll know everything is being handled properly and on time.

I'm with twodogcircus on this one. A good lawyer is valuable. You have more pressing issues to tend to with your rehabilitation, let a lawyer do the paperwork.
