I like your long answers! I had to work on making my initial appointment for a looong time with my therapist. My current dentist and his co-worker are great! My therapist suggested him, and for 8 months she gave me post-it reminders with his name and number, and I lost them all, forgot them, avoided them, until one day I felt brave and made the appointment. My shame about the state of my teeth has always been overpowering and a source of grief and frustration. I have (at least in adulthood) been proud of my looks, apart from my teeth. I spent so many years not smiling, making sure not to open my mouth too wide or covering my mouth with my hand when smiling. Glad to be done with that!
