How to Release Feelings From the Body?

Nirvana, another thought occurs to me. If you are on anti-depressants they can cause all kinds of mental and bodily reactions, as well as really messing with the normal operations of the body.

Here are a couple of links I found informative:

And yeah, the ragdoll thing is kinda funny, but that's a bonus ;) It can really loosen up the joints and destress. Good luck with everything.

I was wondering this, too, lately. I was considering going for massage to help with tension and learning to accept touch in a safe, positive, controlled environment.

If touch is an issue there are now many great alternatives out there. I personally love a foot massage and Anthony bought me this magnificent massager which even has balls in it, heats up and even massages the sides of my feet by pushing in.

A bit expensive but it is just so great and I can have one any time I want.

Hi nirvana

Have you read 'Waking the Tiger' by Peter Levine. it was recommended to me by my psychologist & fully explains how our bodies react to trauma compared to animals. It has been a huge help to me in understanding how to manage my physical symptoms, I re-read it regularly to remind myself that its ok to have these feelings and I can work through them.

I also use meditation & I've invested in a hot-tub. The warmth of the water & the security of my garden really helps me to relax. I use it in the morning to release my tense muscles & at night to help me relax before sleep.

Wow--you guys have some great ideas! I'm trying to collect ideas. I see the chiropractor now for problems along my spine, and I tremble when he touches me. But it does make me feel better in the end. I don't know if I could stand a massage, but a bath is good.

This might be another topic (tell me if it is). I'm wondering about the physical symptoms people experience and how they deal with them.

Thanks!!
S

Hi cragger, I'm not on anti-depressants and have been off of them for about two years with the exception that I did take them around my anniversary date for a couple of weeks in December, and once the date/mood passed I went off of them again.

I take a sleeping pill and Valium as needed, but I'm sure neither cause pain for me.

Hi Cat, I didn't read Walking the Tiger, but I did read several other trauma books that are listed on this site.

I have a massager type thing, and I use it on my lower back. My hips are really starting to hurt.

Thanks
Tammy

Good on ya for getting off of them, I'm working on that myself. I have this thing called a thumper for my back. Feels pretty damn grand when you're hurting ;)

He he ... I thought I was the only Raggedy-Anne about.

I often say "Shake it loose" there is a song with those words and I sing it to myself and shake myself about, picturing all the angst working its way to my fingertips where I can fling it off to the floor and dance on it.

Just googled it and found tons of songs with 'shake it loose' - all genres and even some Jesus songs .... choose your favorite and ....

shake it baby, shake it!!

Hey,

I was never a "Mind-Body" believer until now, not that I've become a fanatic but there actually is alot to be said about visually 'letting go' of your muscle tension as you do slow stretching. I found Tai-Chi was actually the best method for me because it combines light stretch with visualization.

Be mindful in any activity you choose. "Let go" of the tension/anger/anxiety. Visualize it leaving you. Tighten and loosen your muscles, close your eyes. Think of the 'inner you' and smile because YOU deserve a smile.

Raggedy Ann

After I left that message I got to thinking about the Raggedy Ann type of shaking to relieve stress and my mind wondered into a place that most peoples wouldn't go LOL.

I was thinking, what if I was out in public in a huge group of people and someone purposely tried to make me mad and if they knew me they would expect me to get upset and possibly argue. But instead of getting upset. Just out of the blue I started jumping around and shaking my arms and body like a fish out of water chanting Jesus songs. Could you imagine the look on everyone's face. LMAO  OK, don't think I'm not tempted to do it either  It's called shock treatment, and I would want it to go straight onto U-Tube.

Take care
Tammy

Tammy if you do that, you need to let us know so that we can all go and laugh our butts off!!!

Have you tried any of the suggestions yet? Are any of them helping or beginning to make a difference?

Hi bec,
I haven't been angry enough yet, but when I am I will come back and post the results here.

I've been pretty calm and at ease lately (except for that day I was in pain and on my period). As soon as I have a bad day or an outburst I will try the raggedy ann method. I usually take a bath, relax, and meditate about every other day anyway.

I have two punching bags, but I need to get that area cleaned up first before I can actually start using them. My husband said he would help me get his things cleared out of the way next week so I can start using the punching bags and lifting weights. I don't like my neighborhood so I doubt I will run much, but my son runs and maybe he will go with me.

I will keep everyone posted on what works best and if I decide to start shaking like a fish in front of people who intentionally try to piss me off. I think that would be too funny.

Thanks for all the input.
Tammy
