I joined the military for adventure and to stay physically motivated. I embraced the values the military had instilled in their soldiers. I appreciated the discipline soldiers portrayed.

I also loved being a teacher. I went on and pursued a master's degree and was well on my way to earning another degree in Speech Pathology. I was in control of my life; I was succeeding in anything I set my mind to. I deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2007 to 2008.

I anticipated sharing my experience because revealing that I suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder makes me vulnerable, but being vulnerable (which I later found out) was a process that helps me cope with PTSD. I can reveal my PTSD symptoms to anyone, but it is not who I am.
