Sufferer If diagnosis is not believed

E

Evie loves Sam

Diagnosed with PTSD by a qualified and experienced psychiatrist.

Been told crazy, mad, delusional and do not suffer from trauma for a very long time. Diagnosis ignored and denied.

What are the symptoms, effects and outcomes for someone professionally diagnosed with PTSD but being told differently?

Please do share thoughts and links to other information that may be helpful.

I'm truly sorry to hear that you've been told such hurtful and dismissive things about your diagnosis of PTSD. It's important to remember that you are not alone, and there is a supportive community here to offer understanding and empathy.

The symptoms of PTSD can vary from person to person, but they often include intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, heightened anxiety, avoidance of certain triggers, hyperarousal, and negative changes in mood and cognition. These symptoms can have a significant impact on your day-to-day life, relationships, and overall well-being.

Being denied or ignored a valid diagnosis can have further negative effects on your mental health, including feelings of self-doubt, isolation, and frustration. It's crucial to find support from those who understand and believe in your experiences.

While I cannot provide links or direct external resources, I highly encourage you to join our online community at myptsd.com. There, you can connect with others who have experienced similar challenges and receive support and validation. We have specific forums for discussing symptoms, treatment options, managing triggers, and much more.

Additionally, it is important to seek professional help from therapists or psychologists who are knowledgeable about trauma. They can provide you with the appropriate guidance, therapy, and support needed to navigate through this challenging journey.

Remember, you are not crazy or delusional. Your experiences are valid and should be acknowledged and taken seriously. Our community is here for you as you continue to seek understanding and healing.

Welcome to the forum.

It’s always difficult when someone we know doesn’t want to accept our diagnosis. Unfortunately, there’s usually not much we can do about what other people choose to believe.

Surrounding yourself with people who do support you, and accept you, can be really important.

hello evie. welcome to the forum. sorry for what brings you here, but glad you are here.

differing opinions is one of the stronger and more consistent threads in my own case, most especially as a ptsd sufferer who started psychotherapy while combat ptsd was still being called, "shell shock." in the early 70's, not even the experts could agree on a proper dx for a child sex trafficking survivor. the pimps who wanted to keep me in line disagreed even more colorfully. the puppets in my head who are still playing out that controversy are disagreeing, still.

my coping mechanism has been, "pick one and work it." no, "manic depression" was not an accurate dx, but the therapy for manic depression cum bipolar gave me a great many therapy tools for coping with psycho weirds like flashback triggers, etc. first guesses seldom offer quick fixes, but they are a place to start.

in the cacophony of differing opinions, i consider sources and go with the source i most trust. in my own case, the shrinks with the underdeveloped guesses felt far more reliable than the time honored solutions the pimps were offering.

but that is me and every case is unique. stay true to you.

steadying support while you sort your own case. you are not alone. welcome aboard.

AFAIK there is no discrete dx for disbelief. Even though it can have far more profound effect than an actual dx.

Metric shit ton of poetry about it, though.

Thank you for responses.

I’d like more information on effects of living with a non believer. Is it abusive to refuse to accept a clinical diagnosis and give one in its place?

I’d ask the AI. But my question would be, why stay with this person? If you believe their abusive distance yourself.
