Isolating by choice is fine, at least in my mind. Hiding in our hotel room works perfectly for some of us. I have spent a number of research conferences visiting the city looking for quiet areas.
In Baltimore the aquarium was right next to the hotel. I spent an entire day there after I presented. The irony was that it happened to be Deaf Day at the aquarium. So I had full access to the dolphins, fish, sharks... The following day I took a train ride to Washington, DC, to visit a former student of mine who decided to attend graduate school at Gallaudet.
In Oakland I went to Fisherman's wharf and sat watching the sea lions hanging around in a smaller area. In the morning and during the day it was terrific and quiet.
