I'm Joining A Band!

One of the things I have let go is my music. I use to compete at a grade 3 level (highest amateur level in Piping). Initially after my "accident" I couldn't play (shrapnel in the hand limited movement). After 18 months a therapy I had regained the movement in the hand, but found I'd had so much skill fade it was depressing. Once I forced myself to restart I quickly regained an acceptable level of skill, but then couldn't find a band I wanted to play in. I was use to playing in competition bands and no longer could perform to that level. Lower level bands were beneath me. In the end I have come up with every possible excuse not to play, and yet still feel it is something I wan't to do. I know the excuses are a result of anxiety and it's something I need to get over, but the excuses keep coming. Hope I can get to where you are someday.

If you want to do it, at some point the time will be right for you to go out and join a band. Keep playing at home, and maybe that will inspire you to take it further. Maybe a lower level band isn't what you are used to, but it still could be fun. Perhaps you could help others to reach your standard. Never say, never. And maybe some day, you will up for a new challenge. :D

Very good. I played cornet in grammar school, still have it. Now I play guitar with two other guys at open mics, house parties, etc. I love it. I get my thrills, social outlet, music kicks, and the once in a while cheers all at the same time. naturally we play blues.

So, I've been in the band a couple of months now. They are a very friendly bunch.

We practice once a week, and then a group go to the pub for an hour or so, after. So I have been going to the pub too. It's all very sociable with lots of light-hearted banter. We have played two out door events also, since I joined. One was a village fete on August Bank Holiday Monday, and the second was last Sunday in a public park. We were really lucky to have the sunshine on Sunday. Quite a few people turned up, with deck chairs, just to sit in the sun and listen to the band, and we've had a lot of positive feedback from those who listened. We've had a rubbish British summer, and an hour or so after we finished playing the heavens opened, and the rain poured down.

On the bank holiday when we played, the weather wasn't so sunny, but it did stay dry. After playing, one of the members and his wife hosted a BBQ, which was really nice. So not only do I get to play Music, I have met a whole bunch of lovely people, who enjoy being sociable, and having a giggle - good times :p

We have a few more informal outings, but at the moment we are practising for a 'proper' concert in mid October. Then loads of stuff planned for December - I love playing Christmas Carols :D.

For the first time in years, I have a life outside of work - YAY!

Hehe. Clothes pegs are essential to keep the music on the stand, when outdoors!

When I first dug out my cornet a few months ago, wiped off the dust, and opened the case - there was my cornet, my mouthpiece, valve oil, slide grease, and 4 pegs!!
