Exactly, not said but he was trying to get the tone across using a common phrase in the U.S. instead of doing a direct translation. A translation of the idea not the words. It is still the same connotation with out the words correct? I am trying to type this out as he explains it to me He is working on a better phrase. He can show it with the inflection in his voice, so I have a good understanding of how hurtful it could be.

Yes, he translated the idea of the words very well... with the only difference that some of the things are only implied but not spoken if you say it like this... but I like the translation very much and thanks for working on a better phrase. Please do tell him “Herzlichen Dank. Das ist sehr freundlich von Ihnen“ (“Thanks (from the heart). It is very gracious of you“).
