Millworker - Bette Midler

Now my grandfather was a sailor
He blew in off the water
My father was a farmer
And i, his only daughter
Took up with a no good millworking man
From massachusetts
Who died from too much whiskey
And leaves me these three faces to feed

Millwork aint easy
Millwork aint hard
Millwork it aint nothing
But an awful boring job
Im waiting for a daydream
To take me through the morning
And put me in my coffee break
Where I can have a sandwich
And remember

And its me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
For the rest of the afternoon
For the rest of my life

Now my mind begins to wander
To the days back on the farm
I can see my father smiling at me
I'm swinging on his arm
I can hear my granddads stories
Of storms out on lake eerie
Where vessels and cargos and fortunes
And sailors lives were lost

Yeah, but its my life has been wasted
Oh I have been a fool
To let that manufacturer
Use my body for a tool
When I ride home in the evening
Staring at these old hands
Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl
Ought to stand a better chance

Oh may I work the mills just as long as I am able
And never meet the man whose name is on the label

Oh Its be me, me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
For the rest of the afternoon
For the rest of my life

I love this song~

this is a very private part of me here
I really and simply love this song

My dad used to sometimes let me watch Parkinson (I didn't know he had cancer until after he died) I remember this programme was where I first saw Bette Midler, she sang with backing singers I thnk they were called the harlottes or something like that. Kenny Everette (a truely amazing comedian sadly passed also now) did a take on her a few years later dressed as she is here in this song... he kept saying "all done in the best possible taste"!!!
She had earlier in the programme sung big noise flew in from winitchtka (I dont thnk I have spelt that right -sorry). And I remember her doing something with her outfit that on British Tv at that time would have put Janet Jacksons "wardrobe malfunction" into the shade.

I think James Taylor wrote this - But this was the first time I heard Bette Midler and this is I think is a truely beautiful rendition. Everything for me is pretty much a trigger and so I would like to apologise again if this has or does cause anyone offence... it isnt meant in any way to hurt or cause any pain to anyone... please know that....

this song still breaks my heart but I think sometimes it also helps to heal it too.

Everything here on this forum is exposure therapy to me, everything it is painful but I am managing, please know if you are new here and confused or worried, it does and will get better, I truely believe that we can all learn to manage ptsd, I believe it isnt wasted time and that we can hope for a life, I am trying just as you are and it can be a struggle to keep facing things.

I have the album Thighs and Whispers on vinyl but its stuck in a garage and I dont get to hear it unless I go here...

I really do hope you understand and appreciate it... it is to me one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and well please I hope you go to the link I am about to paste...

with love to all here Thankyou

Celluloid Heroes - The Kinks

Everybodys a dreamer and everybodys a star,
And everybodys in movies, it doesnt matter who you are.
There are stars in every city,
In every house and on every street,
And if you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Their names are written in concrete!

(well you can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Some that you recognise, some that youve hardly even heard of,
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.)

Dont tread on Greta Garbo as you walk down the Boulevard,
She looks so weak and fragile thats why she tried to be so hard
But they turned her into a princess
And they sat her on a throne,
But she turned her back on stardom,
Because she wanted to be alone.

Well You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that you've hardly even heard of,
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.

(I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.)

Rudolph valentino, looks very much alive,
And he looks up ladies dresses as they sadly pass him by.
Avoid stepping on Bela Lugosi
cos hes liable to turn and bite,
But stand close by Bette Davis
Because hers was such a lonely life.

Well You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that you've hardly even heard of,
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.

Everybodys a dreamer and everybodys a star
And everybodys in show biz, it doesnt matter who you are.

And those who are successful,
Be always on your guard,
Success walks hand in hand with failure
Along The Hollywood Boulevard.

(If you covered him with garbage,
George Sanders would still have style,
And if you stamped on Mickey Rooney
He would still turn round and smile,
But please dont tread on dearest Marilyn
cos shes not very tough,
She should have been made of iron or steel,
But she was only made of flesh and blood.)

You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that youve hardly even heard of.
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.

Everybodys a dreamer and everybodys a star
And everybodys in show biz, it doesnt matter who you are.

And those who are successful,
Be always on your guard,
Success walks hand in hand with failure
Along The Hollywood Boulevard.

I wish my life was a non-stop hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.

You can see all the stars as you walk along Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that youve hardly even heard of,
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.

Oh celluloid heroes never feel any pain
Oh celluloid heroes never really die.

I wish my life was a non-stop hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.

I have put some parts of this song in brackets because it does depend on which version you listen to- (my preference is the kinks and they have done different versions of this down the years also) I have found many online and I hope that you enjoy this song if you look it up maybe

WOW this is such a great thread - you guys have fantastic taste in music (Radiohead, The Beta Band etc)

One song that always makes me catch my breath is:

Wilco - How To Fight Loneliness

How to fight loneliness
Smile all the time
Shine you teeth til meaningless
Sharpen them with lies

And whatever's going down
Will follow you around
That's how you fight loneliness
You laugh at every joke
Drag your blanket blindly
Fill your heart with smoke
And the first thing that you want
Will be the last thing you ever need
That's how you fight it

Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time

Oh - remembered another song that, in my opinion, is actually written about PTSD.

Memory Lane - Elliott Smith

This is the place you end up when you lose the chase
Where you're dragged against your will from a basement on the hill
And all anybody knows is you're not like them
And they kick you in the head and send you back to bed

Isolation pulled you past a tunnel
To a bright world where you can make a place to stay
But everybody's scared of this place, they're staying away
Your little house on Memory Lane

The mayor's name is fear
His force patrols the pier
From a mountain of cliche
That advances every day

The doctor spoke a cloud
He rained out loud
You'll keep your doors and windows shut
And swear you'll never show a soul again

But isolation pushes you 'til every muscle aches
Down the only road it ever takes
But everybody's scared of this place, they're staying away
Your little house on Memory Lane

If it's your decision to be open about yourself
Be careful or else
Be careful or else

I'm comfortable apart
It's all written on my chart
And I take what's given me
Most cooperatively

I do what people say and lie in bed all day
Absolutely horrified
I hope you're satisfied

Isolation pushes past self-hatred, guilt, and shame
To a place where suffering is just a game
But everybody's scared of this place, they're staying away
Your little house on Memory Lane
Your little house on Memory Lane

There's so many other songs I could add...

Lee Ann Womack - I Hope You Dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that youll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....I hope you dance
.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin might mean takin chances but theyre worth takin,
Lovin might be a mistake but its worth makin,
Dont let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
(time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along,
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

Dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance..
(time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone

Shower the People - James Taylor

You can play the game and you can act out the part
Though you know it wasn't written for you
But tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart
Ashamed of playing the fool
One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice
Oh, father and mother, sister and brother
if it feels nice, don't think twice

Just shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna work out fine if you only will
Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way you feel
Things are gonna be much better if you only will

You can run but you cannot hide
This is widely known
And what you plan to do with your foolish pride
When you're all by yourself alone
Once you tell somebody the way that you feel
You can feel it beginning to ease
I think it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel
Always getting the grease.

Better to shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna be just fine if you only will
Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna be much better if you only will

Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel

You'll feel better right away
Don't take much to do
Sell you pride
They say in every life
They say the rain must fall
Just like pouring rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Love, love, love is sunshine.
Oh yes
Make it rain
Love, love, love is sunshine
Yeah, all right
Everybody, everybody
Shower the people you love with love

I am the Walrus - Jim Carey (The Beatles)

I am he
As you are he
As you are me
And we are all together.

See how they run
Like pigs from a gun
See how they fly. I'm crying.
Sitting on a cornflake - waiting for the van to come.

Corporation teeshirt, stupid bloody
Tuesday man you been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long.

I am the eggman oh, they are the eggman -
Oh I am the walrus coo-coo-ca-choo.

Mr. City policeman sitting pretty little policeman in a row,
See how they fly
Like Lucy in the sky
See how they run. I'm crying - I'm crying I'm crying.

Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife pornographic
Priestess boy you been a naughty girl,
You let your knickers down.

I am the eggman oh, they are the eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus coo-coo-ca-choo.

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun,
If the sun don't come, you get a tan from
Standing in the English rain.

I am the eggman, oh, they are the eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus coo-coo-ca-choo.

Expert texpert choking smokers
Don't you think the joker laughs at you? Ha ha ha!
See how they smile,
Like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied. I'm crying.

Semoline pilchards climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe.

I am the eggman oh, they are they eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus coo-coo-ca-choo
coo-coo-ca-choo choo
coo-coo-ca-choo

State Of Grace - Seal

So strange
It's funny how
We came to meet
Those eyes uncanny
Were my invitation
I couldn't wait
I couldn't wait
To hold you like a baby
Is this what it feels like
You are here now
Oh but I
Can't seem to find my state of grace
Who knows tomorrow may never come
this is what it feels like
One touch, one look that is all it takes
These things forever change us

This is the sound of a feeling that's caught in my head
Makes me think about something you said
To take away my fears
Ohh I
This is the sound of a woken man
Why don't you tell me its you babe
I found you
You babe

Oh but I
Can't seem to find that state of grace
Who knows tomorrow may never come
One touch, one look that is all it takes
These things forever change us
Look at the past
No savoir faire
No that's not us
Baby
Oh but I
I can't seem to find my state of grace
Who knows tomorrow may never come
One touch, one look that is all it takes
These things forever change us
These things forever change us
These things
Look at the past
These things
No savoir fair
These things
I know that are ours
These things
Look at the past
Whoaa ohhh oohh ohhhhhh ohhh oohhh ohhha
Whoaa ohhh oohh ohhhhhh ohhh oohhh ohhha
Aaaahha
These things
Look at the past

The Devil Went Down To Georgia

The devil went down to Georgia
He was looking for a soul to steal
And he was in a bind
'Cause he was way behind
And was willin' to make a deal.

When he came upon this young man
playing fiddle and playin' it hot.
The devil jumped up on a hickory stump and said
"Boy you let me tell you what:

I bet you didn't know it
But I'm a fiddle player too,
And if you care to take a dare
I'll make a bet with you
Now you play a pretty good fiddle boy
But give the devil his due
I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul
'Cause i think I'm better than you."

The boy said "My name's johnny
And it might be a sin
But I'll take you bet, your gonna regret
'Cause I'm the best that's ever been"
johnny you rosin up your bow and play you fiddle hard
'Cause hell's broke loose in Georgia
And the devil deals the cards
And if you win you get to keep this shiny fiddle made of gold
But if you loose the devil gets you soul.

The devil opened up his case and he said
" I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his fingertips

As he rosined up his bow
And pulled the bow across the strings
And it made an evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this

When the devil finished johnny said
"Well you're pretty good ol' son!
But sit down in that chair right there
And let me show you how it's done!"

fire on the mountain, run boys run
Devil's in the house of the rising sun
Chickens in the breadpan, picking out dough
Granny does you dog bite? No, child, no

The devil bowed his head
Because he knew that he'd been beat
And he laid that golden fiddle
On the ground at johnny's feet
Johnny said" Devil, just come on back
If you ever want to try again.
I told you once,
You son-of-a-gun,
I'm the best that's ever been!"

He played:
Fire on the mountain, run boy's run
Devil's in the house of the rising sun
Chickens in the breadpan, picking out dough
Granny does you do bite? No, child, no

I love this song

You could call PTSD the Devil an he ain't gonna win.

Angels - Robbie Williams

I sit and wait
does an angel contemplate my fate?
and do they know
the places where we go when we're grey and old?

Cos I have been told that salvation lets their wings unfold
so when Im lying in my bed, thoughts running through my head and I feel the love is dead
Im loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether I'm right or wrong
and down the waterfall wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call
she wont forsake me
Im loving angels instead

When Im feeling weak and my pain walks down a one way street
I look above
and I know I'll always be blessed with love
and as the feeling grows
she breaths flesh to my bones
and when love is dead
Im loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether I'm right or wrong
and down the waterfall wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call
she wont forsake me
I'm loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether I'm right or wrong
and down the waterfall wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call
she wont forsake me
I'm loving angels instead

This one is for a good friend of mine, that helped me see angels as real. Thankyou ~

Because of You - Kelly Clarkson

This song relates to part of my life.............

I learned the hard way, to never let it get that far

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake a smile, a laugh
Every day of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I watched you die
I heard you cry
Every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry
In the middle of the night
Over the same damn thing

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I tried my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in
Because of you
I'm ashamed of my life because it's empty
Because of you
I am afraid

Breakaway - Kelly Clarkson

Then came this one...........

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I just stared out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)

Trying not to reach out
But when I'd try to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I pray (I would pray)
I could breakaway

[Chorus:]
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I loved
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

[Chorus]

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway
