This might be what I do. Laughter brings me out of dissociation momentarily, then I go back in. The first time I noticed myself doing this, I was working on a particularly horrific memory. I'd go into the memory for a few minutes in an intense flashback, then come out of that and dissociate, then switch to laughing, then back again, over and over. It was the wildest thing. I think in that case the laughter was at how unbelievable (at the time) I found what I was remembering, as soon as I came out of the flashback part of the cycle. It lightened the intensity enough that I could keep going without being pulled under by the memories.I was derealizing really badly in therapy a little over a month ago, and my T said something that made me want to laugh... I let out something like a snort/snicker, and it grounded me for a couple of seconds, then back under the abyss I went.
Oh yes. "Unbelievable" is just to me, and I know it's distorted thinking. It's shifting gradually. And there's always 'unbelievable to -whom-'.
Yes, and I am so fortunate to have people in my life who won't close their eyes.Yet there are always exceptions, always someone who wouldn't close eyes... or not entirely.
