My thoughts are all jumbled so I hope this makes sense.I was raped by a classmate when I was 13 but didn't have any PTSD symptoms for another 10 years. At which time I was raped again by my future husband.

2 years later I joined the army for what I had been hoping to make it a career. 11 months later I was honourably discharged with the diagnosis of BPD which didn't make any sense to me regardless of how many times the doc explained it to me. Some years later I learned that it was a common diagnosis given so people so they couldn't file for VA compensation.

I have been self medicating for many years. My next diagnosis was major depression and substance abuse.

3 years ago I spent 3 months in a phyce ward where I received shock treatment and the diagnosis of PTSD.

I started weekly therapy and medication which about a year ago I stopped the therapy because it didn't address the PTSD symptoms. I remain on medication and a monthly doc visit.

I receive SSDI because I can't work. The thought alone is crippling. Sorry for spelling errors.

I could go on and on but I think this is long enough so I'll just say thanks for taking the time to read this and any comments you might leave.

Hello and Welcome, Snafu!

It took me a long time to be diagnosed correctly as well, but mostly because I felt like I couldn't share "everything" with a psychiatrist or therapist. I have had many different diagnoses over the years and what stuck most of the time was Major Depression and Social Phobia. In the past two years or so I was diagnosed with PTSD and OCD. Anyway, sorry to hijack your post for a minute, just wanted to let you know I can relate in some ways.

My best advice would be to find a therapist you work well with and can trust. They are out there. A good therapist makes the sessions about what you want to work on and not their own agenda. Find a trauma therapist or someone who is trained in and familiar with PTSD.

All the best to you. Hope to see you around the forum.

Hello and welcome! I definitely second (or third) recommend finding a therapist specifically trained in dealing with trauma.
Really hoping that you find the support you need - these forums have been amazingly helpful for me, so hopefully you find something here that helps.

Hi Snafu,

Welcome to MyPTSD forum! :)

I am sorry to hear about the difficulty you have had with getting a proper diagnosis, and unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence. For therapy to be effective, it is best that you seek treatment from a therapist that specializes in treating trauma. There is a lot of information about various types of therapy on this site. I hope you find it helpful.

Take care.

Debbie
