Low Gi/gl (low Carb/high Protein) Eating

I know some people think it can't grow back. I believe it will.

Mine was due to stress and my thyroid, but it did grow back. My hairstylist was the one to find the new growth and point it out to me. Much to my relief since my mom had thinning hair as she got older.

restricted, undressed salad

Are you able to have lemon? I use to squeeze lemons on my salad, instead of any dressing, and it gave it a decent taste.

When I had my ulcers there was so much I couldn't eat that there were few choices. I couldn't have raw fruit or veggies and nothing with seeds. So, one time, when my grandma made strawberry shortcake for everyone, she peeled and cooked the strawberries for me. :D Anyhow, I had to be on the very strict diet for a year, no spices either. When I finally went back to "regular" eating, my metabolism was great, but my food tastes had definitely changed. Things I once liked didn't taste as good to me. It was so odd.

Yes, I wasn't sure about that article. I don't like it when people are extreme in any direction. I hadn't had a chance to research it. Just thought I'd put it out there for you to check into.

I'm glad you found what was good for you. I imagine some of it is trial and error. My niece can't have anything with gluten in it, so I bought her gluten free cookies for Christmas. I've often thought of being tested for food allergies as I know it can manifest in various ways. So this is all very interesting for me to read, though I am sorry you are going through it.

Hashi,
Good for you!:happy: And wonderful that it worked and with extra benefits on top.

This sounds like the exact type of eating (the exact general proportions) that is widely thought of as being balanced diet (by the mainstream medical professional and registered dieticians). I personally do not think it is high protein and rather is normal protein way of eating. ;) I think the reason why we think of it as high protein is because the average western diet is so high in carbohydrates proportionally. You are getting all the food groups and in good proportions and regularly and that is very healthy. High protein diets such as Adkins, Scarsdale and Dukan are not balanced and not supported by the mainstream medical world as healthy and these are true high protein diets/eating plans.

I am glad your intolerance tests were done properly. I think from what I know that that is the most reliable way of diagnosing them possible so although not perfect it is all good. And you have confirmed it with your observations which puts the cherry on top.

I would not do anything that required measuring even at this late stage in recovery and also use plate sectioning or visual portioning.

For me I only managed to get over my eating disorder when I gave up vegetarianism (I already felt that all food was dirty or wrong so it didn't help and legumes affect my irritable bowel disease) but I know many who have done it without so credit to you getting past all of that and all the other requirements which come from the intolerances.

Have you tried roasting chick peas and using them as a snack? I love them!

I am assuming you find Omega 3 oils a problem for your beliefs but just in case you wouldn't there is amazing support of them being a wonderful anti inflammatory.

I imagine your body will continue to heal and stabilise as you go along and all that inflammation continues to be settled and hormones balanced! :joyful:

Abstract, thank you. It's hard work, so I'm pleased and... ahem, rather proud that I'm managing it.

I'm glad you've achieved a much better relationship with food. I find I have to be careful to maintain this, since the whole culture around food and eating seems to encourage unhealthy and unnatural feelings towards it, particularly for women and girls but increasingly for men and boys too.

You make a good point about the protein level being normal rather than high. It feels like a lot of protein, which shows that I wasn't eating enough before.

How do you roast chickpeas? Can you do it with ones out of a tin? Sounds nice.

I get Omega 3 from flaxseed in my blueberry smoothie (made with low fat coconut milk, and the highlight of my eating day!). I'm also working up to trying the hempseed oil that's been sitting in my fridge for about two weeks, because that's a good source and generally beneficial too. My experience of hempseed powder wasn't a happy one, but apparently the oil isn't as bad. I'm mindful, though, that a friend of mine who was taking hempseed oil every day failed a drugs test for a new job because of it! There isn't any psychoactive content in the oil, but I suppose the cannabis plant origins still show up.

Hashi,

You just discovered basmati??!! Where have you been??!! :)

I hope some of the food avoidances are temporary until you get more stabilized.

I did raw for awhile. Lots of work but I learned how to manage and it was pretty easy. But I ate soooo much! Always hungry and losing weight. Lol!

I love lentils and chickpeas(big fan of Indian and Med cuisine!). With soo many different herbs and spices it's easier to have variety.

Have you tried maca powder? The only "superfood" I haven't tried.

Glad your hair is growing back!!!!

Hi Hashi and Britt!

You may want to play around with your oven to get the best exact time and temperature but I do the following:
I use canned chickpeas.
Dry them off before roasting (paper towel works well)
Put single layer in an oven pre heated to about 375 degrees.
Shake pan every 10 minutes or so.
Between 30 minutes and an hour but I find 45 mins what I usually do.

You can add spices half way through, after or at the beginning or have them plain. I think they come up crunchier if you do them naked to start.

To season you use a little olive oil (normally do first - spray works well) and then use powdered spices. Paprika, garlic, cumin, curry powder, etc in whatever combinations you prefer. You can do sweet ones too.

Yes Hashi, society is crazy when it comes to food or body image. It's the reason why a lot of those who are anorexic are not recognised as such. I am so proud of myself as only in the last year have I been able to hear all the ridiculous talk and remain unaffected! I thought I was fully recovered two or three years ago but the amount of progress I have made in that time is huge. Really wonderful that you can do thi!? I actually think the right nutrition is extremely important for those of us with eating issues. We can't afford to not get what we need.

I am sure you would be getting the necessary amounts of B6 , B3, zinc and magnesium that we need in order to turn your flax seed (ALA) type omega 3 oil to the necessarily DHA and PHA omega oils and so would not need to take them in in that form (which means fish oils) so that is good! Pretty perfectly nourished you are!

The smoothie sounds lovely and I will have to try it! And that is very interesting about hemp. Your poor friend.

Thank you Abstract for the recipe. Now I want my husband to run out and get them for me so I can try it. I'll wait, but only if I have to. ;) They sound yummy and I'm always looking for a healthy snack.

I actually have to relearn how to eat. I still have all the old anorexic messages in my head despite being overweight. For the most part, I eat healthy things. Christmas has made it a little harder with the cookies. But, say I had a few of them during the day, then that would be the only thing I would eat. Nothing more. That isn't healthy, I know. I usually do not buy things that I know I will eat a lot of. At least 99% of the time.

I need to work through my eating issues. If I lower my calorie intake anymore, I will be eating nothing. Yet, I'm not losing one darn ounce. I am so frustrated. I think if those nasty messages were out of my head I would probably stand a better chance of losing weight, feeling better overall.

I like reading what you have accomplished. It gives me hope.

Sailorgal,

Yes, I mentioned this to my Endocronoligist who treats me for the hypothyroid. Actually he brought it up with me when I told him the difficulties I was having. I even told him I could bring in witnesses for my eating habits! He checked my meds and we talked about one of them that I was weaning off. He said it should start getting better once I was off that and I start back up exercising, etc. He said it was known to increase weight or make it more difficult to lose, even if you aren't eating more. Odd isn't it? Not sure about my other meds. I should look into them. I'm hoping between my therapy and getting physically active, that things will start turning around. Maybe I can kick that metabolism into gear.

Thank you for reminding me of that!
