I am still amazed that we (NATO and allies) are still in Afghanistan. Nation building? BS BS BS BS.... We should have reduced that nation to a total smoking ruin and then left. After the destruction is complete, we send the message -- attack any of our coalition partners again and we will return (without warning) with the purpose of total annihilation. Clausewitzian warfighting at its best...

It is easy for our "stay-at-home and forever safe" politicians to waste the lives of our military personnel in nation building operations. The politicians don't have to pay the price. The American military establishment's perspective on the political elites was described by Brevet Maj. Gen. Emory Upton in his book "The Military Policy of the United States". He was a Civil War artillery officer who greatly suffered from what is now recognized today as Combat PTSD. He committed suicide in the 1890s. The book was published after Upton's death by then Secretary of War Elihu Root.

Nation building in the environment of an unwilling populace has never worked. Time to conscript the politicians into military service...
