New Here
So i'm new to this forum, and i'm not sure I am even posting in the correct space.
Currently I am going through EMDR for the first time in regards to a host of traumatic issues related to my past. I have so far only focused on one target memory.
Right now I am surprised I am even able to consider the memories traumatic, but my T validates that these experiences certainly were (for example: witnessing my father choking my mother on the kitchen floor when I was seven or eight).
Even now it feels ridiculous to even call that traumatic, which brings me to the central issue: I have no emotions attached to my memories. I don't have flashbacks. I just don't feel anything about them, one way or the other. even with the EMDR, all I am getting so far is fleeting physical sensations (which surprised me, I was very reluctant about EMDR and doubted it's efficacy).
Does anyone else experience this as well? Does having no emotion attached to the memory mean that it has already been processed? Does it even matter now to go back through all this stuff?
I should clarify and say that since I have begun therapy (about a month ago) I have, off and on, felt very out of it, shut down, and numbed out from almost everything. I feel no love or joy or even pain. then I will switch to over-reacting to something very intensely - after which I calm down and realize it was out of proportion. But nothing seems to fit, right now. I feel like I don't even know myself. This isn't the first time in my life I have felt this way, but it certainly is magnified right now.
Anyone else have similar experiences? thoughts? opinions?
