Mental Health Assessment-really Scared!

Thank you Brucielucy.

I just don't know what to do now...my counselor emailed me today, so I took the opportunity to tell her about it all. So, at least she'll know and might have a few thoughts on it by Thursday.

That's good Ice_Fire, you don't have to make these decisions alone.

Your counselor will have time to think through what you have told her. But I am sure they will not expect you to make your choice instantly. Neither should your choice be fixed. I am guessing that you will be able to choose one route and then change your mind later if it doesn't seem to be working for you.

What you have been given are all possibilities. It shows that there is no one answer, and neither is any one the 'right' or 'wrong' option.

Yeah, I was just told to ring the CPN back when I've thought about it. What I don't really get though is why I can't continue seeing my current counselor? Yeah ok, two different types of therapy would conflict, but tbh, my sessions with her are just a chance to offload and have a moan. I've been working on opening up about the abuse, but we don't really 'work' on it as such...she just offers a different perspective and just listens until I've talked something over to the point I have a bit of an 'ah ha' moment.

Yep, you've answered your own question!

There are specific types of therapy that can be used to target trauma - such as EMDR amongst others. I am sure your counselor has been brilliant, but perhaps this is beyond her expertise? A lot of therapy is simple 'talk therapy', and it may be that is what a trauma therapist would like to continue, but you may find the feedback different, or she may take a different angle.

Anyway, you have enough to be thinking of, and I am glad you already have a counselor to talk it through with.

I am sorry I have not replied to this post until now. I am very glad to hear the assessment went well for you. Isn't it such a relief when things work out? As for the decision you need to make, this is a tough decision. I can't imagine not seeing my current counselor. She has helped me make strides, even though I have a very long road ahead of me. I know you will make the decision in your best interest. Think about what, in the long run, will help you most. Good luck!!

Ash

Hi Ash,

No need to be sorry at all! It's nice to 'meet' you and receive your input, thanks :)

Yes, I can't imagine seeing someone else, she knows more about me than I do at times! I really like her, but it's frustrating being left to it at every school holiday. As Brucielucy said, she probably doesn't have the right 'expertise', as she's mainly a school counselor, but the thought of not having her in my life is very scary. Everything seems scary to me :(
