More Than One Way To Skin A Cat!

As of 1 March the legislation changes in my field of work meaning that you have to have higher formal qualifications. When I was studying 10 years ago I was only 4 modules off getting a higher qualification than what is now required but I got caught up in work and didn't bother about finishing it as I was happy with what I was doing.

Now, with the new legislation you have to have the piece of paper but they will only accept qualifications within the last 5 years which screws me over and meant the possibility of having to re-study 14 competencies/modules off campus on top of working full time. The National Institute of Accountants, despite saying that would accept references etc, were not in the least bit helpful and wanted me to go back and do modules like demonstrate how to conduct a telephone conversation and use simple software. What a joke.

I have learned there is more than one way to skin a cat and have gone down a different avenue and have received recognition on 10 out of 10 of the competencies/modules I applied for (100% strike rate) leaving me with 3 or 4 modules instead of 14 to complete (320 hours of work) and I still have the potential of getting a RPL for one more module as it has not been assessed as yet. It also makes the qualifications current with only the preparation time of presenting all relevant information as the Tertiary Institution had requested - some 6 hours so I figure I have current saved myself about 240 hours of study if not more.

What a relief and it just reminded me that when someone says no........don't give up! :thumbs-up

It's a shame they won't help get you grandfather'd into the program since you're obviously competent. At least you only have to take a few classes instead of all of them.

Mark Twain said (about 125 years ago) that 'Nobody's life or liberty was safe when congress was in session'. Sounds like it fits legislatures around the globe.

Great Nicolette. Glad you were able to find that route of getting competencies. That makes the task much less daunting.

That must be such a relief for you Nicolette.

So much time could have been wasted if you had not taken a different route.

Where there is a will, there is always a way.

Hi Nicolette,

One less thing for you to worry about.....a relief for sure !!

There goes to show what can happen if we persevere and not automatically take no for an answer :)

Hi Nicolette,

I have been through this also. Glad you were able to get RPL. Good luck with the rest of the studies.

Take care

RPL is usually just nonsense... and that's what's really sad about it. I used to sit on a board in the military for my trade for these issues, and the amount of times you could clearly see some people had more skills than what we even had, they would just say... "stuff it, they can do the course as it won't hurt them", or some nonsense like that. What is the purpose of having it if its not used correctly to reduce training for those who already have the skills and knowledge, if not usually more than what is being assessed in the first place... I never really just get the mentality.
