From my Grandpa, understanding, patience, and acceptance.
For one thing he was always patient with me, listened to me throughout my childhood. That was important because I definitely wasn't getting that at home. Then he taught me understanding and acceptance by never having a bad thing to say about my father, despite the fact he divorced his daughter and he most certainly could have put my dad down, and allowed me to complain about my mom without making excuses for her or acting like it was wrong of me to be angry. Showing me nothing but support and humor when I ended up in an institution. I never felt bad with him. I felt important and loved.
