News Movie: Split

Maybe it's just the circle of people that I tend to have contact with, but having not seen the film (cinema full of people? Not likely, I'll wait for it to hit the tv!), I actually like the fact that it seems to have drummed up a bit of curiosity about DID.

I don't like Hollywood's habit of making the psycho-killer a DID'er. That storyline has been done already, move on! But I don't know that this film, being clearly beyond the realm of reality, is going to define people's understanding of DID all by itself. It's not a great way to spark interest and education, and something more along the lines of what Philadelphia did for AIDS and homosexuality would be gratefully received.

But people seeing the movie, or even just the trailer, and wondering what DID is really about, is not of itself a bad thing in my book. People being able to pronounce "Dissociation" correctly - even that's progress, you know!?

I also say no not really at this too because just the trailer I posted early in (and still I...
I get what you're saying here. It should be noted, though, that there was more than one trailer out, and the first one, anyway, had no reference at all to the "superhero" aspect of this character.

I don't like it because movies like these get me taken less seriously as a DID patient. Sybill and Eve have already ruined my reputation. Didn't need another face in the mix to future pollute the validity of my condition. I'd rather no films were made about it instead of these piss poor representations.

I found the trailer incredibly offensive, but watched the movie a couple of days ago, when I was in the mood for getting really angry at something.

The movie was far less offensive than the trailer. There are parts of it that are realistic. There are parts of it that are very patently unrealistic. As a result, there's plenty of room to have a conversation about where the realism stops and where the fantasy takes over. It's a really good portrayal of fears and fantasies about DID and it rules out the possibility of taking it literally because of the superpowers thing. In the end, I think it works out.
