4 suicide attempts in over the last year, one death, 2 stomach pumpings, 3 hospitalizations, and who the heck knows how many ideations. Im sad, Im scared! There is another family member in the hospital for an attempt. Depression where is your cure?!?!?
I see it runs in my family. :(

I see it runs in my family. :(
yes, but how?
is it nature or nurture?

no one has yet shown a basis in the actual hard DNA, and the epigenetics of turning different genes on and off controls things like how much sugar or fat our blood system mobilises when adrenaline is released

It looks like the main part of the intergenerational transmission of trauma, depression and things like borderline personality are
either learned - in the case of low self esteem and thoughts of "I'm not good enough", "this will only get worse" etc

or not learned, in terms of coping strategies that your family and teachers either didn't know or never bothered to teach you - or you may well have been too caught up in trauma, that you didn't learn it first time

Trauma in families is real and absolutely heart breaking - but please don't for one minute accept the idea that it is engraved in your genes and that it is somehow your destiny- there really isn't evidence for that, and there is increasing evidence to the contrary.

Sending you hugs (if you will accept them) and kind wishes

Just as an illustration, a neighbour has genetically identical twin daughters,

there is always the possibility of different epigenetics from different positions in the womb and sized share of the placenta etc

and of course of different birth and life experiences.

One of the women has traits of Borderline Personality, the other doesn't, showing that the basic genes are insufficeint cause.

@trying2movefwd I hear your concern, and yes depression is tough to deal with. But the rest of your family isn't YOU... if you are doing everything that you can to help yourself with therapy, medication, writing a journal, eating healthy, talking with friends, reaching out, then your chances are good that you won't attempt it. I think that you might need to stop focusing on everyone else and focus more on you and the good things you are doing to get healthy....
