My Mom Is In The Hospital :(

From what I've read this is a result of very high blood sugars and dehydration.

My grandmother had a problem with the dehydration part too with her diabetes. It didn't help that she drank coffee throughout the day. We had to get her to drink water and other things in order to maintain her levels. It wasn't easy. She was in her 80's and very stuck on her way of doing things. When it was my turn to be with her, I would drink water with her since my body has issue with fluids. She was better at doing that then instead of being combative.

They say once you are thirsty your body is already dehydrated. Encourage your mom to get fluids in, preferably not sugared drinks. My aunt bought a ton of these for my grandma and I thought I was going to have to go crazy on her. I didn't. Just told my grandma not to drink those.

Keep us posted. It can be very difficult to be far away and have this happen.

KD: I know, I like texting. No verbal communication needed. Initially I was upset that my mom didn't contact me directly until I realized that the DKA makes her brain not work right. My mom doesn't have PTSD or phone issues so I didn't understand why she put something like that on facebook and didn't just contact me directly.

Well, I just got off the phone with my mom. Her new insulin pump is/was wireless. I guess something went wrong with it and it was not giving her insulin like it was supposed to. They tried to get it to work at the hospital and couldn't get it to work there either. It appears it may be defective. That is scary.

They got her blood sugars stabilized at the hospital and her electrolytes are balanced again as well. Unfortunately, she was throwing up so much that her stomach and esophagus are raw (she was throwing up blood). She can only eat soft bland food until it is healed. Until they get her blood sugars figured out she has to check them manually and take her insulin manually. My step-dad woke her up at 2AM and they were 134 (good). 3 hours later he had to wake her up again and they were 25 (very low).

So basically she is still struggling to manage her blood sugar levels. Thankfully, since my step-dad is back in town he can help her monitor them and keep her on track. He also know what it she is like when they are too low or high and what to do to help her before it gets like it did on Thanksgiving. It's just that he can't be there all the time.
