Yesterday, I went to see my Macaw, it took a few bites for him to realize that I am unaffected by pain and then he came right to me. His owner asked if he drew blood, I said yes (when I really wanted to say, well yeah, his beak is strong enough to cut my finger right off). She then told me she had never seen him take to someone new so fast and usually people start off with a stick. Fortunately for me, animals like me. She said it took her four months to get him used to her enough so that she could hold him. She used a stick for those four months. I Know how to handle them and using a stick shows him (Guapo) that I am afraid. Key to getting animals to not attack is showing no fear. I get to bring him home next weekend. I am so excited :D

That's how I got Guapo, the owner broke his leg in the cage and couldn't afford to get it fixed so he abandoned him. Someone like you took him in to get him healthy and trustworthy enough to rehome him. It took her 2 years, I'm guessing she didn't want to let him go, but as you know they need a lot of attention and stimulation and she wasn't able to provide him that because she has an Amazon, 2 dogs, kittens, fish and who knows what else.

Hey Britt,

I just brought him home last night. He is doing so good. It usually takes a couple days and even weeks for them to get adjusted to a new environment, but he is already talking and coming to me. He was kind of nervous and feisty (like he wanted to be left alone, but when we walked away, he would say, "hello, hellllooooo, it's me Guapo, hello". It was a hilarious!!!

That is good to hear. I often forget that there are other animals out there that need rescuing other then dogs or cats or horses. Such a shame. To put it mildly. I find they rescue us just as much if not more then we rescue them. I'm glad your bird is working out. :)
