if you're worried about putting something on there permanatly, ( the words ) because you don't know if it will look well, you could use chalk first? it just comes off with a damp washcloth so no worries then with mistakes. If you do paint something you don't like, after it dries, paint that bit over with white paint instead of say, the orange or blue. It covers better-makes that part back into s clean piece of paper to start all over with.
Michal's and AC Moore both have kind of reasonably priced canvas, in case you're still looking for cheaper ones to maybe experiment with cutting. Maybe buy a really small one for a couple dollars, to see if it works?
