Not sure where this will go but I am curious....

When I was in most everybody but our group was into patches. You know, the unit degination on the shoulder in some ugly art work, sewn to try to look military or threatening. For a while, mine was "Pedro" our call sign and then it went to 20th SOS -- the famous Green Hornets, and I have long forgotten most of them. Now that I think of it, I was passed around a lot.

We would hand out special cards when you were extracted or rescued. Nowadays I read where they have frog feet tattoed to your ass. (I want to have that done.....)

I never took patches seriously. I kept some things but I never thought much about keeping the patches I wore, or refused to wear I should say. I wonder if that is part of the PTSD thing? I know that when I do see a patch or my old badge, a kind of adrenaline rush hits me and not a good one. At one time, I suppose it did, especially my Ranger patch. That's one I am proud of.

But for the most part, I don't get it. I kept a few things but I have seen guys with patches, patches, patches, everywhere.

Patches! I realy think that is a US Thing Viking

I have noticed that the Brits seem to carry more Unit Flashes These days than when I was in but that seems to be as far as it goes.

Only Patches I ever kept, were my Wings, Dagger, Swords and Geboa. But only because the first three I earnt with blood and sweat of my own back and the last was a pride thing.

Oh god! The Air Force is really into patches. Wing patch, squadron patch, rank, name tag, wings. Several times, on other Vet sites I've seen the heavy duty in-country grunts give us crap about having camos with all these bright shiny patches on them! I got rid of mine as soon as I could and not be chewed out.

Or I could have worn the melting flight suits they had back then, just a small black name tag.

My unit patch looks like a teenager on crack designed it. Its stuffed with so much crap you wouldn't believe it. Then again it is hard to describe with one image what Amphibious intelligence warfare is. So they opted to put everything including the kitchen sink into it. I will try to find a pic on the net to show the joke.

Here are mine. They were never worn. We were only allowed to have out ship name on our dress blues and whites. Personalization was only allowed on the Bosun lanyards that the Bosun's Mates were allowed to wear with their dress blues. Old tradition.

The Battleship Badge is real crap. Looks like it was designed by failing first year art student.

Not sure why it won't post my other images, but I'm about to go to the What makes you angry today section. Grrrrrrr.

It's one thing that I like about the Marine Corps; not too much emphasis on that stuff. I can't recall ever having a patch of my unit on anything. Of course I was in during the Dark Ages.

Jar, from the shape I'd see you guys in country, woulda thought it all fell off! Did they ever allow you guys a shower, shave and clean uni? We zoomies were the candy asses of the war. But we made bigger holes in the ground, remember "daisy cutters"? Instant jungle removal.

The only thing you get to wear in the corps is some badges. I earned my wings and lungs and can wear the badges for them. The unit patch was only on our pt tee shirts. made good sweat mops. I never had anything with a unit patch either Jar. unless your a zoomie I don't think Marines still have much to do with patches.

Marines don't need no stinkin' showers. :ROFLMAO:

We could kill with the smell alone.

Daisy Cutters!!!! I remember her well.

I was never into the patch thing either (Navy). Some guys bought a cruise jacket (civilian clothing) and put any patch on it they could find that related to them/their unit/battlegroup, the targets we bombed, and the cruise(s) they were on. As a Golden Shell Back (crossed the equator at the 0.180 coordinates you were allowed to have a gold dragon embroidered on the inside of your dress uniform cuffs - Liberty Cuffs). On liberty if you were required to wear your dress uniform you could turn your cuffs inside out to show the dragon... Meant nothing to me. The Navy pretty much killed the shellback initiation on my first cruise, and has totally destroyed it in the following years. Hazing...
