In my deepest depression (borderline postpartum psychosis) my shoulders slumped as if the weight of the world was on them. It was! I'd had a severely brain-damaged baby girl, along with having a 15 month old little boy who was not ready to share his mommy. My husband, an immigrant from Greece, was a hard worker, with 3 jobs, but he had no way of comprehending what was going on inside me. Our marriage did not survive, but few with severely ill children do.
I have fought to forgive myself for what I did not know, and the fears that I had about the future.
I fell down a flight of stairs several months after she was born, which resulted in a pinched nerve between my shoulder blades. For several months, I could not look down to let my new, and very impaired baby girl breastfeed. It was the only thing she could keep down...for a while. She puked most feedings for her first year, till someone suggested she might be allergic to milk. Of course, I was eating cheese, drinking milk, etc. We changed her to soy and she began to thrive better.
During those years, my body began it's slow 'break down'. I did learn to do the neck stretches, and turns as I mentioned earlier. Over the years, my posture has improved. I have to remind myself sometimes to pretend there is a string above my head, pulling it straight up, and that helps me keep 'aligned'. I can see the difference in my posture over the years in pictures.
The best thing I can advise, is to care for your body. Stretch, use lotion after bathing to rub your arms, legs and shoulders. Learn to appreciate and enjoy the abilities that your body does have and treat yourself to things that relax you. Some of the shopping malls around where I live, have 'mini-spas' where you can get a 10-20 minute massage for about $20-$25 dollars. It sounds like a lot, but it is a definite treat, and is worth every dollar!
Be good to YOU!!
