General Posture & Depression

In my deepest depression (borderline postpartum psychosis) my shoulders slumped as if the weight of the world was on them. It was! I'd had a severely brain-damaged baby girl, along with having a 15 month old little boy who was not ready to share his mommy. My husband, an immigrant from Greece, was a hard worker, with 3 jobs, but he had no way of comprehending what was going on inside me. Our marriage did not survive, but few with severely ill children do.

I have fought to forgive myself for what I did not know, and the fears that I had about the future.

I fell down a flight of stairs several months after she was born, which resulted in a pinched nerve between my shoulder blades. For several months, I could not look down to let my new, and very impaired baby girl breastfeed. It was the only thing she could keep down...for a while. She puked most feedings for her first year, till someone suggested she might be allergic to milk. Of course, I was eating cheese, drinking milk, etc. We changed her to soy and she began to thrive better.

During those years, my body began it's slow 'break down'. I did learn to do the neck stretches, and turns as I mentioned earlier. Over the years, my posture has improved. I have to remind myself sometimes to pretend there is a string above my head, pulling it straight up, and that helps me keep 'aligned'. I can see the difference in my posture over the years in pictures.

The best thing I can advise, is to care for your body. Stretch, use lotion after bathing to rub your arms, legs and shoulders. Learn to appreciate and enjoy the abilities that your body does have and treat yourself to things that relax you. Some of the shopping malls around where I live, have 'mini-spas' where you can get a 10-20 minute massage for about $20-$25 dollars. It sounds like a lot, but it is a definite treat, and is worth every dollar!

Be good to YOU!!

Thank you so much for all your replies - I am honestly quite overwhelmed. When I logged on it said "one person had replied, there may be more after that" and I thought oh, maybe a a couple - but wow! That is a lot to take in

Toria, your husband sounds like a mean piece of work. Id start taking care of my own recovery and leave him out of it.

Oh Springer - he has his moments... :wideeyed: I did however manage to apply my own heat pad this morning - I seem to have glued my shoulder blades together with it - but it's hot and it's helping! Funnily enough, he did try to help last night... in his own way!!! He said I was sat watching TV like a rabbit in the headlights - he said he could see the tension in my shoulders and that my whole body was rigid.

I used to experience back pain between my shoulder blades. I noticed it also coincided with my posture not being as erect as it could be, thoughts of being oppressed by circumstances and feelings of self-pity.

That pretty much sums it up - now I just need to do something about it.

I will look in to massage and also consider taking the "little helpers" that the Dr prescribed me back in June that are still sitting in my bedside cabinet because I'm a :chicken:.

Once again - HUGE thank yous - it's good to know you're not the only one and AKJ - thank you for sharing something so personal.

I will be back once all the replies have sunk in.

Now to Google "massage" without getting icky results!!!!!!!! :whistling:

I definitely have worse back pain when I am depressed. It is almost like I feel it more acutely than when I am doing okay.

I would definitely suggest you see a chiropractor or getting a massage. I would try a massage first to see if that helps.

You can also get Badger Balm for sore muscles and back pain. I usually can manage to get it rubbed in between my shoulders and neck when my back is bad. It is really awesome stuff, it heats up and gets all warm and really helps all the muscles to relax.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! That is SO much better!!!

I went for a sports massage with a posture expert a fortnight ago and had a follow up appointment yesterday. She was great - didn't poo-poo my theory at all. The first session concentrated on my shoulders - they took a week to calm down but after that I've been fine up there. The pain seemed to migrate downwards! So she concentrated on my "glutes" yesterday... Ahhhhhhh!!! Soooo much better!

She's recommended Yoga, or Pilates on a Ball. So that's my new year's resolution - to find a good Yoga class. Not something I know anything about, so that'll be fun.

Thank you all for the suggestions and help - I'd probably still be suffering and complaining now without you all! :)

Been going to a chiropractor for the past couple of weeks and it has reduced my upper back/shoulder and lower pain pain considerably. Even my chest is not as tight. It has been a great addition to my other therapies.
