Ptsd Forum Goes Caribbean - 2012/2013?

To give those in the US a better idea of possible locations, here is a list of the highest traffic sources from the US, as the US provide the largest user base to this forum, followed by Canada then the UK. Whilst this is statistical data, that doesn't necessarily represent the majority of people who are willing to attend from a given location... if you can work that out, that may help derive the actual location of the get together.

Going on holidays now... so will leave this thought with you all to gather data.

Coming from Australia I would want to make a holiday of it - I love the beach & the sun & find it very relaxing. Isn't Hawaii not far from the USA also? Personally we would be looking at around $2000 - $3000 just to get there so as long as we could get some holiday value out of it I'm ok....it's going to take a day of travel for us Aussies just to get up to the USA.

St. John, an island in the British Virgin Islands in the Carribean, has a wonderful park/campground and many acres of park land for hikers. They provide the three room canvas tent/ cabin with a small kitchen, siting area and separate bedroom. The whole reserve remains untouched as they have built raised walkways linking small bunches of cabins to the larger path. They have a lovely white sandy beach, a restauraant, and meeting spaces further uphill. Maho Bay is a place where lots of different workshops meet. My husband and I went for two weeks. One gets there by flying into St. John's and taking a small boat 'ferry" I'm not sure at all of the prices or whether a group rate can be negotiated.

I'd also want to make a holiday of it as I'll be coming from the UK.

I've just goggled St John & Maho Bay it looks like a dream of a place, self-catering with plenty of restaurants, loads of activities but also opportunities for quiet times & alternative therapies. The weather looks good for most of the year except higher rainfall July - November. check it out at stjohnisland.com

I guess it will depend on whether people want to go self catering or a package deal.

I too have been to St Johns/St Thomas, and it is beautiful... The beaches are gorgeous, some of the best in the world...Trunk bay is absolutely awesome and Megan's Bay was (at one time, not sure about now) one of the top 10 beaches in the world...........BUT!!!!! Everyone needs to remember that Hurricane season is from JUNE 1-NOV 30......That's the way it is in the Caribbean.......

For those of you who have voted on the poll and not chosen the Bahamas would you please post your preferred location thank you. We have obviously established the timing has to be from Dec to May so the next step is working out a destination. Once people have posted alternate destinations I will then create a new poll. Thanks

I have what I think is a great location, and NO it is not because I live here, but that is certainly a perk. The Tampa Bay Area has a lot to offer. Sun, Sand, lots of things to do. It has lots of big motels right on the beaches, but the coolest thing is it has that slow, small town feeling to it during the off season.

The airport is Tampa International Airport, easy to understand and get through. Any place on St Petersburg Beach or Clearwater Beach is pure heaven. Tampa it self is not on the beaches and a much busier city. The interstate system is easy to manage and you would be only a couple of hours from many of the usual "tourist" spots. Sea World--Disney World--Just across the bridge is Ellenton Mall, one of the countries Largest Outlet Mall. That is if anyone wanted to do the usual tourist stuff. For me, just the small quiet beach scene will do quite nicely.

I'm sure Marlene can fill in any of the places/thing I forgot.

Anyway, just an idea. This beach area would be perfect for those of us who do not handle crowds very well.

I think it's important to fly into an International Airport - that would save time and money for everyone since most could get a direct flight that way. Florida is ok with me. I would also consider California or Texas or New York. What about New Orleans? That city could use some tourism - it's still trying to recover from Katrina and has lots of interesting things to do. (Just a thought).

St John's Island

This is our type of holiday, self catering, camping.

Though I do love a good hotel too, all the pampering of meals being provided and beds being made for you.

But we will go with the final decision, where ever it is.

Coming from Australia - self catering or camping would be totally impractical. Do any of these places have hotels as well? As we are travelling at present googling on the iPhone is a bit limiting.
