Ptsd Forum Goes Caribbean - 2012/2013?

We are waiting on the official poll to finish first for the destination, which ends end Jan. Bahamas is overwhelming and the majority, but we must let things run there course. None of this stops anyone beginning to save though. A rough guide for us from Australia, including airfares, is about $50 per week that we need to save as a couple.

Hi Everyone

Don't have time to read the entire thread due to crying baby, but do want to warn everyone to steer away from planning anything in this area or any of the areas on the poll during Hurricane Season, which runs roughly from June to November. That is why so much is discounted. Also, having been to the Bahamas in December, the weather can actually be too chilly to be on the beach, which would be a bummer. Mid-April and May though seem to be decent months if you are looking at going toward off season to save some money. I've been to the Bahamas four or five times and can tell you that May is a decent month to go.

Whoo Hoo....Bahamas here I come  (not yet....but sometime in the next two years)

Hey Anthony and Nikki, I have been searching for travel agents catering for the Bahamas. Maybe we can work out a group thing for people from the land of Oz???

We looked into packages, but they pretty much suck for what we want to achieve at this point.

From our limited understanding thus far, the majority of flights into the US for any decent sort of price means LAX. We then have to fly internally from LAX to Atlanta (seems to be the norm for the Bahamas), we can then get a direct return flight from Atlanta to the island of choice for around US$200 return. We have found them as low as $1500 return for the March period for some shonky airline, but we plan on flying Qantas to the states, which seems to be normally around $2000 - $2500 return per person to get from Melbourne to Atlanta. Then add the island flight... so around $2200 - $2700 per person return flights from Melbourne to say Nassau.

The part that really freaks us out, is the accommodation. Not quite like booking here, where you have an all inclusive price. Instead... the room advertised price, say US$150 per night, then also comes with taxes off aorund $60+ per night. So the actual cost of accommodation is much higher than the advertised price. Then... they actually charge on a per person basis for the majority of them. How stupid is that one! It actually matters in some places, as say as a single person you pay $1500 a week for a room, then the exact same room next door for two would cost us $3000 per week. This is only in some places, so we will be looking at all the fine print when taking on the booking process. Hopefully those over that way can help us out with all this closer to the date.

We are estimating for the two of us to have a decent time without counting costs... minimum $12,000 and that depends on what the exchange rate is going to be like at the time. It could end up being more like $15,000 if the US economy picks up drastically between now and when we can book. It seems bookings have to be inside the 12 months window, so bookings early next year will be on the agenda by the looks of things try and get the best prices for the following year.

The stupid thing is though... the Bahamas is a Commonwealth country, so we don't need Visas to stay in the Bahamas. But because you pretty much have to go via the US to get to the Bahamas, it looks as though we may need Visas to travel through the US, depending on whether or not we have to leave the International terminal at any point for flying internally, ie. if the LAX to Atlanta is still International, then hopefully no visa required, as the Atlanta to Bahamas should be classified as an International trip from the US. I would envisage still needing one though, because if anything went to shit and you needed to stay overnight due to cancellations or delays, then you would have to leave the International airport thus require a Visa.

After checking on prices of flights, accommodations, taxes, estimated food, and then expenses, I decided I just can't swing all of this...Just way to expensive for me.....So I am bowing out of all of this, but I hope it comes to a reality for the rest of you...

That is a shame Wendy, but understand. The reality of this is that Nicolette and I are coming over, regardless what others do, we are taking a holiday to the Bahamas in the beginning of 2012. Whether others attend or not... we are trying to see what interest is around as we are happy to accommodate the majority to a time of year that we can attend with the least work disruptions for Nicolette as possible, ie. she could not attend at some periods as they are extremely busy times for her company... others have the same issues... so if we find that happy medium for those that are attending, then it will be all good.

So this is happening for us regardless... we hope others do get onboard with it and make it a catchup at the same time. Would be nice to meet as many people as possible in one visit to the US.

I hope you all realise there is no requirement to stay for the entire time and for example; those close to Miami can make a day or overnight trip if they want. Options are varied if there are budget restraints. I know this doesn't help everyone but may help some.

Discussion essential for those planning on attending. What are your thoughts? WE NEED TO DISCUSS!

I want to throw something out there about this whole trip... that Nicolette and I discussed today on the way to shopping. Basically, in my mind we have two years, close enough, before the actual event occurs. From everything I am finding out thus far about holidaying in tropical locations... we continue to gather more and more knowledge and possible solutions to meet the majority of people, more affordable / flexible solutions to meet as many needs as possible. Nicolette says that if we continue to toss things around, then that will only piss people off and cause confusion... Me I am the opposite, with the opinion that we are already saving as off a month ago, yet we only need to have a firm decision on location and accommodation 12 months out from the trip (approximate dates are important for now, which a poll is running), as that is only when you can book places, airfares, etc... you have to be within a 12 month window basically, as companies can't foresee further as airlines typically only have 12 months in advance for schedules... and holidays are often planned to that.

People keep presenting really good information, and to me personally, I don't have a problem with change this far out from the event, as stated, we have already begun saving, so the rest is here nor there as we know approximate costs and that is what we are saving to at this point. I understand that there are people who would like to attend, though may not be able to afford a week or two in a tropical location, but could afford to scratch together a couple thousand for 2 or 3 days with others on this forum.

There are people planning on coming from across the globe, so I am avid that discussion is flexible if that is what others want. I am happy to just pull my head in on this also and accept what has already been voted, ie. location being the Bahamas. That is certainly where we started discussing... but new and constant information keep arising, and I don't plan on introducing great changes to that general location, ie. the Caribbean.

For example:

The Caribbean has a few Club Meds, some more restrictive than others, some for families, some for adults, etc. (I have linked the following direct to the Club Med appropriate page)

Now... sticking with what the majority asked for, a holiday and beaches, and even staying within the Bahamas / Caribbean area... obviously the further towards the equator the better the weather and water.

I would love to try and meet the cost with location for as many as possible, and the majority of forum participants reside within USA. Obviously we must also make it a holiday location with beaches, as those travelling are paying a lot more than those within the USA to attend, so it needs to be a good location, good accommodation, etc... though also attempting to keep the costs down because they can get very expensive, real quick.

Doing some comparison costs with someone like Club Med, being all-inclusive, it doesn't matter if you are single or partnered, as the cost is the same per person. Single, you get the same room as a couple, for half the cost... as it is a package deal on a per person basis. Like Turkoise, one adult, 2 nights, $600. 2 adults, 2 nights, $1200. This does not include travel to the island though...

Quite honestly, I like the information that we are learning as we go here with more input, more experience shared from those living and who have travelled these parts.

Some more research on Nassau as an example, and it is quite dirty compared to other places in the Bahamas, as Shoka also pointed out. The paradise island part seems to be quite a clean place, but the actual main central part of Nassau.... not so great. Paradise island though is going to set you back around $400 per night, just for accommodation in most places, minimum, but I also did find a relatively good place which offers a semi all-inclusive package, as it doesn't include flights, transfers, laundry... just accommodation, food, basic drinks and entertainment.

  • JK Harris
  • Tends to be more friendly for singles if they pair up to share rooms, as the cost is not based per person, but more per room / package, ie. one adult, 2 nights, basic room, $576 vs. 2 adults, 2 nights, basic room, $676.
  • Again, getting to location costs + transfers, etc on top of this.
Finding lots of options in and around the Bahamas, but really need lots of honest feedback from those planning to attend.

If you're not planning on attending, then you really have no need to be discussing this IMHO.

I do plan on attending, but whether hubby can make it too or not is still an issue, but hopefully by then he will be well enough.

Right now finances do not allow it or to be able to save enough, tight budgets and all that with only me working. Having said that, as long as hubby's compensation payment comes through in time, (already been fighting since his accident) I at least will be there, have told him he will be fine in a packing case for the flight's there and back, if he says he can't make it with me.

I would even bring our tent and camp on the beach if I had to, just to meet up with everyone. MMM now I am thinking big style.

Anyway I will go along with whichever location and date is set and go from there.
