Yes, PTSD is the same for everyone, and every suffers the same range of symptoms at their worst, however; there will be symptoms that are worse based on the type of trauma.

I COMPLETELY agree!!! I will give a bit of my "experience" on this one!!!
I believe the same assault in civilian life verses the military have generally different aspects.

1) Members are trained to trust that each other are cohesive and are there for each other, to the point of their own lives depending on each other.
Effect- This goes completely against being personally assaulted. (Not the same, but similar to the way, harm by a family member has different effects than by a stranger.)

2) In the civilian world if a "co-worker" assaulted you, even if you chose to keep it a secret you could leave and get another job.
Effect- In the military you HAVE to remain or face charges of desertion.

3) Military, no matter what anyone says is still a man's brotherhood.

I won't even get into what the ramifications would be IF one DARED to report it!!!!!

Wow!!!! I am now a wreck, but I can't believe I got that out. I realize some people may disagree and not see things the way I do. I mean NO offense to anyone. However after more than a decade of dealing in/with the military that is EXACTLY how I saw it!!!!Link Removed I think I actually just felt a bit of ANGER!!!! That's a first.

Cherryblossom, I know exactly how you feel about the different breakdowns and the idea of treating diagnosis instead of symptoms... it happens. Unfortunately, even professionals are not perfect. Heck, Depression is even a diagnosis right now, when it's really just a symptom. That's actually another thing that *will* be changing in the DSM. Depression is a symptom of something much deeper.

I had an interesting conversation with someone yesterday about how, at least in America, we over-diagnose. We even treat our pets for adhd. When I was a kid, everything was about ADD. Now ADD isn't even a PC term. The new "correct" term is ADHD, as the symptoms of ADD also are in ADHD and any additional "symptoms" of ADHD that are not in ADD, are just part of a category where you check off 2 or more, 3 or more, etc. So it's not cut and dry. It's not simple, and as a general rule of thumb, if a medical professional tells you something is wrong with you, but that "something" does not cause any harm to YOU or OTHERS, you might want either another opinion or to just opt to not get any medication/treatment for it. Here's a much lesser example: I went to a dentist who saw discoloring in my tooth, and wanted to yank my front teeth altogether and put fake ones in to make me look prettier. Now, I get it. Her profession is more cosmetic-focuses than anything. I've had compliments on my natural teeth. I love my natural teeth. I love how I look. Others love how I look, and if there are some people who can't see past any flaw I may have, then I don't worry about those people. I'm not going to live my life correcting every problem someone thinks I have.

If someone asks if you have baggage, respond with "everyone has baggage". If someone asks you if someone has screwed you over and hurt you beyond repair, tell them EVERYONE has been hurt beyond repair, but it's about picking yourself up and putting yourself back together and moving on. You keep superglue in your pocket and work on yourself as time goes on, but it's never going to be the same after you are traumatized. You will never be the same person you were before today happened. You will never be the same person you are today, after tomorrow. We are ever-changing individuals who are WHOLE and COMPLETE and PERFECTLY IMPERFECT, and any diagnosis someone may pick out of a book and put on our record, and treat us for or not, does not label us as anything less than who we are. We are not our diagnosis. Our diagnosis is just a term, a name, for the hills and valleys we are facing today. And it will not last forever.

Interesting differences between countries, where here in Australia, yes... its still primarily a males military, however; if you even hit, pushed or rubbed up against a female in a sexual way, and she reported you... you would be facing charges... very hard to get out of it, even with rank. Obviously proof is required, and if a second person witnessed, your screwed here.

There is zero tolerance in the Australian military for any type of abuse against females. Sure... the women party and root like rabbits... a good percentage are lesbian, but you still don't assault them or your arse is grass. Seen it myself when in... nasty.

Even if no proof is found... one or the other will be reposted quickly, one will be moved near instantly to another unit or building upon the base until posting if severe enough.

I slept with a private in my own unit, out of hours obviously from a big night out, and when seniors above me found out as she mouthed off about sleeping with a senior, they moved her just to remove any possible issues.

A person should be allowed to walk around butt naked and not be assaulted. Living in a world that believes you are asking for it by walking around butt naked, however, means it's not safe to walk around butt naked. But you should be able to without fearing for your life.
