mysage (Lori),
Just to give you a laugh about job hunting- I once had to put together a tent as part of a job interview for a cashier job in retail. Needless to say I hadn't brushed up on my outdoor skills and failed miserably. So now every job interview I think- I'll be okay if there is no tent. Also years ago I was in NYC in a law firm interviewing but there was a problem- the lobby chair looked like modern art and I fell when I went to get up and the person interviewing me saw it. There was no recovering from that one! Good luck with the hunt. I'm starting to look again.

I'm trying to understand how it is you fell??? True, hard to recover from that one! No pun intended!!!!

I have gaps in my employment too although I don't have a national crises to attribute it too. One way to overcome is to share tour personal growth and development in your cover letter. No doubt the whole world understands post 9-11 employment wasn't high on the list of those directly impacted.

Maybe look at alternative avenues like job fairs where recruiters see you first, giving you an opportunity to make a first impression versus a resume screening.

Job hunting is not fun right now.

Sailorgal,
Thanks for your suggestions about job hunting. I don't live in NYC anymore and the career I had doesn't exist here. So I'm trying to figure out what field to go into. Plus I walked away from everyone except family and one friend after 9/11 so I don't have references.
By the way the chair wasn't shaped like a regular chair. It had no back and was made with a slippery plastic material and was low to the ground with no side arms either. Combine that with the stockings, suit, and my natural clumsiness and that's how I fell. At least I've always been able to laugh about it.
Laurie

Lesson learned: stand and never sit in lobbies with backless chairs! Lol

That is a tough situation and quite frankly, if I was interviewing you that would be awkward indeed. The great thing is that references can be anything. You volunteer? Even assist someone work in the yard? Work is work - paid, volunteer, etc. They want to see your character and work ethic. Worse case scenario, volunteer once a week. Great way to network as well. Being creative is a must in this day and age.

I hope there are some resources in your area. Possibly check out local chambers and other business organizations. I don't know if you are familiar with Linkedin, but check out jobs and you can see career profiles of others and how they are marketing themselves.
