News Rape and politics, how do you think about this?

fwiw that can take many forms:

She / he told me she was 22
she/he never said know.

Mine even said I initiated sex ( I was asleep.... I did not initiate sex, I was asleep)

But because only the perp or perps and victim is in the room that's all they need to say. And yes( it makes ’liars’ out if all victims, or ’snowflakes’ who ’chhanged their minds’

The unreported aspect.... You have many examples of it here in this forum. We live in a rape culture which unwittingly most of us take part in.

The very possibility of the idea of being called out as a liar and the retraumatistion of report, knowing it will get nowhere.

Many women are only in a ’place’ to report after statute of limitations expires. We know how trauma can be.

Sorry had to go get my girls from school...

The other profound stat that I saw was that 70% of all perps were known by the victim...

I guess that coincides with the 70% of cases that aren't reported

I'm not saying there's causality just that there is a correlation between these numbers...

Not necessarily in terms of rape and SA,

"Known to" can be incredibly misleading

Acquaintance of a friend.
Employee at the same business,
And customer at your workplace
Someone who has tried to chat you up at a bar...
All are "known to"

In homicide, it gets even more misleading
A member of a rival street gang.
A hit man and his victim.
A rival drug dealer or pimp.
A street walking prostitute and the guy who's car she got into.

Apart from instances where there's a crowd or an absolutely random victim

Almost all homicides can be shoe horned into being classified as "known to"

@Florian7051 ...and those are civilian stats.

You came after me, so you might know the more recent Marine ones. In my time we were warned in boot camp 4:5 WMs will be raped -for the first time- their first year in, and most of the rest will get mopped up sometime over the next 3. Shrug. Just cost of doing business. You wanna run with the big dogs? You’re gonna get bit. No. Way. In. Hell. do you report that shit. Not if you wanna keep doing your job. Blackballed is the best that could happen, booted was far more likely... because most of the time? In was someone in your direct chain of command. So every option available to you is bad, and you have to keep working with these assholes day in and day out. New command? Oh yeah, you really wanna start off in a new unit bitching about your old one? I don’t f*cking think so, right? So you patch yourself up the best you can, go back to work, hope you aren’t bleeding through your camis, and the next morning at chow you get vodka with your orange juice and a handful of antibiotics and morning after pills from whomever has the in at medical. 9:10 you could also expect an NJP from it, sometimes same day, at least within the week. Especially if you were injured pretty badly and dragging -or worse- late. So you’d better square yourself away fast, keep your damn mouth shut, and be on your A game. Or you will be painted a malingering shitbird so fast your head will spin. But even if you’re killing it? That NJP is prolly gonna happen anyway, just as insurance against you getting big ideas about saying word one. I can’t speak to modern practice, but that was SOP when I was in.

58% of victims reporting in the military in US faced reprisals.

Pulling together like a team to stay alive? :( I’m not trying to be cantankerous just showing how even in a community you think you know there is rape culture

Friday, it's tough to say because I'm not a WM. I will say the atmosphere is not that any more, but whether they practice what they preach IDK. Now the amount of training we have to go through is absurd. It seems like they really are trying to put an end to it. IDK.

I don't believe anything that NBC News publishes... I'm not biased one way or the other either... the same goes for FOX News...

It's all politically driven and biased garbage... The only thing NBC is good for is sports...

@Florian7051 It was really f*cking obvious back when. Everyone knew, there just wasn’t anything to be done about it. Guys couldn’t say shit, he’d be their gunny just as much as he was ours, ya know? Same damn problem. Worse for them, in some regards, if they were set to guard the door or similar. Which would happen an awful lot if someone was acting uppity or bristling in public. Mind your bearing motherf*cker. If I can do it? So can you. Anyhow, back to bullshit orders... Refuse? That’s disobeying a direct order. Try and jump the chain to report anything? We’d be at their throats for f*cking with our careers faster than needle dick the bug f*cker would be after their ass. Ditto if it was outside the chain, just some asshole at liberty, say shit and catch hell. Shrug. Rocks and hard places. For everyone. It was one of the things you had to prove as a WM coming into a new unit... not only that you could do your job, but if shit went sideways that you weren’t gonna be making guys hate themselves for not stopping it, or having to help cover it up. So hazing sometimes took an... interesting... turn, as people pushed you hard, just to see what you’d do. LMFAO. Some of those bouts are hella f*cking good memories. :roflmao: Not subtle, my boys. :D (Oh you wanna play? I can play! :sneaky: Damn I loved the snot outta those assholes) But you still knew it came from a place of they’d been f*cked over, hard, before. And didn’t wanna add another thing to avoid looking in the mirror over. Shrug. Just was what it was. A small thing, but a very endemic thing.

@Friday
The Corps is changing they're taking certain MOSs in the crypto intel fields that get to skip right past boot camp and MCT and report straight to their MOS school with rank and bonuses. They don't qual with iron sights on the rifle range anymore. And non essential training has choked out combat training with everything from the UVA's Rape and SA prevention to PC and Sensitivity training, to handling of sensitive information on social media, etc... WM's are allowed in combat and combat support MOSs, Hazing is gone just a distant memory, even uniform standards are different: visible tattoos are not acceptable anymore, say goodbye to the high and tight horseshoe flattop. It's just a different Corps. Some of it was for the better, some for the worse but it has evolved into a different animal. I really believe they are trying to destroy rape and SA within the ranks and erase the stigma of reporting in the event that it does happen. Again I'm not a WM, so I can't see the world from your eyes, but I was in the Corps to watch all the aforementioned events take place. So I saw both the "old" Corps and the "new" Corps 1st hand and while a lot of it went to shit, a lot of change was for the better. You have to take the good with the bad. I think the Corps is making strides to change the way things once were.
