Reassuring Phrases From Your T

Hi everyone,

I’m really struggling with some things related to my disability right now, both with school and from a medical standpoint. Therefore, right now, my therapy needs to focus on getting and receiving emotional support from my T rather than addressing cognitive distortions, reducing anxiety, coping techniques, etc. All of which are necessary to deal with my current circumstances effectively; however, I feel as though I receive my only emotional support inside the therapy room at the moment. I am very good at dealing with the intellectual and logical side of things, so my sessions need to focus on the supportive side. A good part of that involves providing reassurance to my little one, from others, not necessarily myself just yet. Most of which comes from my T right now because I need the reassurance to be emotional in nature. To make things more complicated, my EMDR T and I, who is in addition to my main T, are working through a recent therapeutic rupture, that I don’t have the time, energy, or cognitive resources to repair right now, but I need to use EMDR as a tool to help me cope with the nature of my circumstances, so that aspect of the situation is truly a double edged sword.

Anyway, below is a list of phrases I gave to my T last summer in an effort to provide her with things that might be reassuring, but I still have difficulty realizing and accepting that I deserve to be cared about etc. I am wondering if anyone else has anything to add to the list that has been helpful?

  • I’m here for/with you
  • You’re not alone
  • You’re not in trouble
  • I’m not going anywhere (leaving you)
  • You can/it’s okay to cry... (fill in the blank)
  • You didn’t do anything wrong
  • It’s okay to have your feelings
  • Do you need a hug/to hold my hand?
  • I’m not angry/frustrated with you
  • You are important/you matter
  • I’m not judging you
  • You’re safe here/with me
  • You don’t have to pretend
  • You can let it out
  • I’m right here
  • Nothing is your fault
  • Your feelings are real, valid, and a part of who you are
  • You can trust me
