EM1, one of my functions now is to oversee the Physical Evaluation Boards (PEB, new MEB) and LIMDU process, now know as IDES (Integrated Disability Evaluation System). We see very few Navy personnel being out processed for just PTSD. IF they were, I probably not be here. Everything that Spock said is right on and don't be afraid of the of the diagnosis and treatment. Below is the process, to hopefully make it a little less scary. All of this can be found in SECNAVINST 1850.4E, very long 300 pages.
PEB Process: 1. A doctor must right a PEB on you.
2. Your unit must right a Non-Medical Assessment on you. This says you are either a crummy or great Sailor and why or why not the Navy should out-process you. You can rebuff this letter if you do not agree with.
3. You must meet with the VA rep and they will send you for more examinations. Usually general exam and another mental health to confirm the diagnosis.
4. Several doctors in DC review your record and make a determination (informal board).
5. If found unfit, then you may request a formal board and plead your case (also in DC).
6. If found unfit but still "usable" you can be retained.
7. If found fit, you must be determined "world wide assignable". (separate process)
Steps 1 thru 3 must be completed with in 100 days according to Congress. The DON is actually graded on this. I meet with the Dept Head for this function and the XO weekly to verify we are in accordance with guidance. VERY BIG!
You are more likely to be separated for alcohol failure than PTSD, so please get this under control. Let me know if you have other questions regarding this process. Please remember I can only give you generalities on the process. For detailed question you are allowed to get a Navy or VA appointed IDES lawyer (ask your Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO)).
BTW WWBN are slowly going away, lack of funding from Congress.
