We are a Harvard University research team currently working on a study looking at people who harm themselves to better understand what kinds of thoughts motivate these behaviors.

We are interested in recruiting people who use this website to participate in our research study. This study will be completed online over the course of two months and participation is completely voluntary. People who are interested in participating will be compensated up to $100 in online gift cards to Amazon. Additionally, 6 of the 100 participants we are trying to recruit will earn an addition $100 in gift cards for their participation.

A few important things to know about the study are:

1. All information collected will be kept completely confidential.

2. Participation is voluntary. The link we provide will send people to a website telling them about the study. Once on that site, they can decide whether or not they want to participate. Also, if anyone starts to participate and decides they no longer feel comfortable or they are no longer interested, they can end it without any penalty or punishment.

3. In addition to collecting information from participants, we will also provide links to treatment resources.

4. This study will include only participants who are 18 years and older and U.S. citizens.

Please click on the link posted below to complete a screening questionnaire to see if you qualify for the study. If you qualify, you will be told more about the study and you can decide whether or not you want to participate.

Edited by Anthony: PC for the link, as their form has been abused by spambots.

Thanks for your consideration!

Thank you for your interest! The moderator of this forum told me that I would not be able to post the link directly (to prevent spamming) and that they would add it when they have the chance. In the mean time, I can try to either message you a link to the screening survey or my email address so that I can send you the link that way. Thanks again!

I was not able to message you. Let me know if you run into any problems or have any questions!

I don't qualify, and I think I know why. I also think it would help to study those who are in recovery rather than those in the depths of it and unsure how to get out. That is, you can learn a lot from those who have been there, done that, and are moving on.

Why are you focusing on just cutting? I'm curious.

Thanks.

Are you looking for people who are currently struggling with self harm/cutting or also people who may have thoughts about it but don't act on them?

I don't want to be mean or rude or anything, but I think you might be limiting yourself by only talking about cutting. Thee are a lot of ways people harm themselves. Sometimes they burn themselves, or pull their hair, or they turn to drugs and alcohol. Self harm encompasses all things that people do to deliberately cause harm to themselves. But it seems like you're just focussing on cutting.
