Resolution And Wonderful Direction From A Book

ACOA Guy

New Here
I've known that I've had non-combat related PTSD for over a year now. I don't need to go into all the detail, as I'm sure it is the shared experience of many here. However, for the basic framework, I had an abusive and alcoholic father and a distant and enabling mother.

I've been told I had all sorts of disorders... even medicated for a couple. I've spent thousands of dollars on therapy. Nothing has really helped. Over the past three years, I've seen my life unravel and felt incapable to do anything about it. Friends and family have suggested I do one thing to help with my job, another to communicate, another to be more social.. etc. Being a compliant sort person, I always jumped right in to do what anyone asked... even if it was at the expense of something else. At 47 years old, I was always upset, always off balance and constantly ruled by my emotions.

Finally something snapped and I thought that nothing else mattered, not my job, not my family, not my planned future or anything else. I just wanted peace. I cut ties to every self improvement action and threw away all the helpful advice. If I did not work on this one basic thing and this one thing alone, it was all over for me.

On a frantic search I went to my Audible account and searched for any primary works on PTSD or CPTSD. Surprisingly, there was very little there. However, by chance I came across a title "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel Van der Kolk. It has made all the difference in the world.

I have had several unprecedented victories that I would be glad to share if anyone is interested.

Regards,
C

Thank you for sharing, I looked it up. I was looking for something as well but didn't have a direction to go.

Take my :hug:s and thanks for sharing what you did, I'd like to hear of those victories :) your story seems interesting and I suggest to stay on forums.

Had a similar experience, with an abusive and alcoholic mother and an appeasing and distant father. I'm trying my best to deal with it, but there are parts of me that are really adapted to that life.

I put a hold on the book at the library (I'm second in line).

Bessel Van der Kolk is amazing. I'd read a number of his academic articles but did not know he had a book until my therapist showed it to me early this fall. I read it in a weekend, and of the hundreds of books and articles I've read on complex trauma and PTSD this is by far the best. I'm so glad you found it and hope others will too. The beauty of it is that it is written in such a way as to be helpful to both therapists and people who suffer from the effects of trauma.

I should check out Bessel Van der Kolk, hope the poor libraries of croatia have anything... :(

I love that book. I had a hard time getting in print but found it on kindle and downloaded and read it right away. I think I need to reread it!
