What I was talking about didn't involve the internet. (I didn't have internet at that house, I used the library.) It was just a kind of antennae that boosted/ amplified the cellphone signal somehow, so I could use the phone.

Hmm. That's cool. I get a lot of calls about cell phones not working because the internet isn't working. That's why I was thinking that. Plus the 2 cell companies I worked for also had one that needed the internet but that has been a while. I guess they have another kind. I know there are these boxes (not from the cell provider) that says they boost cell signal but don't.

@desiderata310, do you know if your cell provider (or any cell provider) has good cell signal in the area?

You can hook yourself up with a unlimited data plan and use your phone as a hotspot. You can also mirror your phone onto a tv with a HDMI connection using a USB to HDMI connector and watch things like Netflix, Amazon Video, HULU Plus that way as well.

Also, many cell providers have internet and tv like AT&T Uverse, and Verizon Fios.

Are there any open public wifi networks? Not the best option as you can easily get a virus off the network but it is an option. Also, are there any neighbors where they will allow you to share a wifi and pay part of the bill?

Those are the only other options, besides DTV and HughesNet that I can think of.

ETA: I would make satillite my last resort as not only are they god awful expensive for the speed you get (compared to other companies with the same speed) but the latency is horrid. So if I have a certian latency with 25 mgs DSL or even cable or cell provider, that latency doubles when you go to satillite because of the need to beem from earth to space and back to earth.

Latency is basically how fast the data traiffic is moving. So the slower the traffic the more buffering and dragging and slower everything is.

DIsh TV offers internet also, and it's better than Direct TV.

The other thing you have to remember with a dish as well, is that a lot of them cap you at the amount you are able to stream. (upload and download usage), and will often charge if you go over your cap. So if you use hulu, netflix, things like that, you won't be able to do daily streaming. It's a right pain in the arse

I had to use Hughes Net because we are rural. It was horribly expensive with added charges.
I am totally without now since I retired. The choice was internet with phone service or food. I picked food.

I am moving to the middle of no-where I just spent over an HOUR with Direct TV and I would rather...

I was always wondering which carriers are the best for that. Because one day I want to live in a place with more trees than people for sure. So I know that I will have to research those options. So DirectTV is not a very good company?

Have you checked with the loca phone service where you are moving? The reason I ask is you might actually be surprised what they offer I grew up in the middle of nowhere literally. Our closest neighbor was 2 miles away, closest city/town/village that had any kind of commercial business like store,gas station or post office was 21 miles away but my parents have had high speed fiber optic internet service for 15 years thru the rural telephone cooperative. You can thank the US govt for that.

I'll second what @FauxLiz said. If I lived a few miles further east, I'd be in the territory of a local phone co-op that has great high speed fiber optic internet. I happen to be in an area where the phone service comes from a largish national company and they 'can't' provide me internet at all. Wouldn't hurt to check, if you haven't already.

I was going to message you about this but I agree. Google the local phone comany and see if they have service in your area.

I work for one and it is suprising of how far rual we have services.

There is a distance issue with DSL. So a CO and facilities within 22 thousand (ish) feet as the crow flies and forget about getting DSL at all. But fiber is being ran all over by the company I work for and it suprises me some of the speed these customers are getting and where.

There is an issue of facilities being exhausted (over loaded) and still being sold services. But its worth a google search and a call.

Also, many places have small local services. Like where I lived just outside of Kansas City, KS there is a small cable company (totally can't remember the name nor can I find them but they were only in that area just outside of KC) and Google Fiber started in KCMO so though that is not a rual area, I am just saying local companies are all around.

The company I work for is starting a new technology called DPO where we can double the speed (and do so for free) for copper pair. Basically a copper pair maxes out at 10mgs (DSL single port) but we have the abailty to now run 20mg through it. And that isn't based on distance but abilty for the technology.
