Self-regulation by rocking

This is embarrassing... but sometimes I start rocking. I never let anyone see me do it. Sometimes even at work when there's deadlines and lots of pressure. Sometimes my thoughts will create the stress. Sometimes at night in bed. Like I said, I never ever do it in front of anyone else, and kind of reminds me of an autistic boy I know.
Does anyone else do this? Does anyone have any other suggestions for self regulation?

Some things I do at work when I get stressed out include putting on smelly lotion and smelling my hands. Place a rock in my hand and concentrate on feeling the texture of it to get myself grounded, or even getting up and taking a short walk or a quick break. If rocking works for you and helps calm you down then keep doing it! Everyone is different and have different ways of soothing themselves. There is no right or wrong way.

Honestly, I was so thrilled when I discovered that rocking helps me ground. Even at my worst, it works! And I haven't really discovered a downside.

When in a public place, if I'm standing, kinda swaying (a tiny, nearly imperceptible bit) helps me ground in the same way.

Sending support.

when I left residential treatment it was part of my discharge plan that I had to have a rocking chair as I spent so much of my 4 months there in one grounding. I agree with others...if that is what works do it. rubbing different textures can also be helpful

Hi friend, this is actually called stimming ! Tons of people stim in different ways, especially those who are neurodivergent like those with anxiety, ptsd, or who are on tbe autism spectrum. People who aren't neurodivergent do this as well. Its just your body coping with emotions, be they stressful ones or happy ones. If you do not wish to stim in the way that you do, it may help to get something to hold like a fidget cube or a stim toy. It may help to start drumming your thumbs, or tapping your feet. This wont necessarily stop you from rocking, but it will introduce new stims into your brain to consider. (Personally, I find rocking very calming and there is nothing wrong with doing it. )

I rock, don't care were I am or who sees me... just very gently back and forth, slows down my breathing, helps me to focus on here and now... with all the crazy stuff going on in the world, my rocking in public is the least of it.... it is very soothing to me.

I think of it as self soothing, but yes, I sure do, do it! It reminds me of when my mother used to sit me on her lap and rock me in the old rocking chair. I have vague memories of this, but also I have a photo of it when I was maybe 3 yrs old, sitting in her lap while she is sitting in the rocking chair. I assume we were rocking....

These days, I have been between therapists. My old one left the practice I was going to unexpectedly, and the new one cannot see me for a few weeks yet. Adding to that is the fact that I had to find a new one, as the place I was going to had no therapist that took my insurance. What a hassle! While I was going through all that, I have been rocking daily, sometimes not even caring if someone saw me or not.

I have been doing some things to self sooth. I crochet, I paint pictures, I listen to music, but one of the things I used to do to self sooth I can't do, which is go out for a walk. The reason is that I just got diagnosed with a foot problem and I am supposed to take it easy and stay off my feet for awhile as they heal.

I have some fidget toys, they help too. I have also been journaling.

None the less, rocking seems to be my go to method of self soothing.

I rock to soothe and texture is soothing. When I’m not asking stressful stuff I rock and rub something soft but rough -crocheted blanket.
I seem to have lots of specific tactile needs- not just vestibular ones like rocking.
