Like @Dee Morris I learned of a very high correlation in school, but even then the numbers are suspected to be grossly under reported, for the very simple reason that painting yourself as a victim, while in prison, is stupid.
Even so, remember its a squares & rectangles thing (all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares!).
It's also known as the reverse logic fallacy... People try to correlate in reverse (or get emotionally involved and try to create a relationship / correlation where there isn't any), but it doesn't work. ((if most offenders are victims, then most victims are offenders (false); most criminals are poor people, then most poor people are criminals (false) ; if sick people take pills, then if I don't take pills I won't get sick! (false). Et cetera)) Reverse logic doesn't work.
