I have always loved to travel. Despite nearing half a century, my preferred mode of travel is with a backpack, in cheap guest houses or hostels, and without and agenda.
I had so much anxiety for the 3 weeks prior to leaving for Cambodia. My daughter was off travelling, I was home alone, and my eldest is also travelling around the world. So my kids inherited this particular love of adventure and I wondered if I had set myself up for failure by buying a ticket to the other side of the world. I so miss the adventurous aspect of myself that I have known.
To combat the fear, I chose to take off some pressure. I figured if I could get there and spend a week, it would be a success, a step towards being whole.
I did it. Not only did I make it there, I met up with a friend (I have equal fear about being alone and connecting with others) and I travelled through remote areas alone where I was the only foreigner and managed to get by without speaking Khmer. I stayed the whole 3 weeks (which was once a short trip, but now is more than enough)
Step by step. I still have hope for recovery and am grateful for the gifts of kindness received and opportunity to go to new places while others may not.
