Starting A Business

This is probably the route I am going to have to take to create income in my life and keep somewhat occupied, or at least as occupied as I can handle. Self employment, I mean. I know this is an international site, but for us in the US, is it only me or does it seem that working for others has become more harsh over the past five years or so?

I find that I crave more control over exactly what pace is expected of me and of how I pace my time - including the ability to work from say 2 AM to 5 AM and then sleep a bit and get up and work when I have the energy once more. I rather doubt I am going to get this working for someone else. For me, working for someone else seems to be about fitting my square peg into their round hole.....with PSTD to deal with, this does not seem to work very well in my case.

Circe - If I had a dog and lots of dough, I would pay for that dog massage! A lot of people treat their animals like people and would do anything for them. Maybe consider researching that in your neck of the woods.

Squireparty - I too have always preferred being my own boss. It has helped me given PTSD unpredictably requires various levels of maintenance at unpredictable times. So much easier not to have to answer or explain to a boss.

Also like so many of us, sleep is an issue. I often enjoy working into the wee hours if I can't sleep. Then at least I feel I can create value from what used to be pure torture staring at the ceiling, pacing and so forth.

Hi circe47, YES I would pay 25$ for a massage for my dog. But...I thought about your question quite a while and this is, what came to my mind; Why not teach some lessons, where you can teach dog owners, how to give their dog an appropriate massage?

Or you could do some workshops with interested parties... Or mixed courses like theory in health, feeding, and so forth. And practice like massage, skills, correct clipping of the nails, and so forth...

What do you think of this?

I thought of this idea a while back while massaging my high strung Border Collie. By the time I was done she had her tongue lolling from her mouth and was fast asleep. My sister thinks something like this would go over big somewhere like SF or down in Beverly Hills where pooches are pampered.

Eventually I'd like to rent a small space and set up a sort of doggie day spa that included a bath, grooming, pedi, and a complete massage experience that included soft, quiet room with zen music and essential oils(light application of lavender) on my hands for relaxation- you know.........like a massage experience that a person might get.

I would go about it by putting up flyers at the dog park and at least massage flyers at established groomers.

Thanks for the input and support. I really, really think this would go over big in a really dog friendly location like the ones mentioned above.

Yes.....I definitely think teaching classes would be a great business idea as well. I have seen canine and equine massage techniques marketed already. But- having classes in person in your home town would be a brilliant idea.

Circe47 - for sure, go for it. I was watching a rerun of a pilot that never got picked up unfortunately called Pet Psychic. It was fantastic. This woman was amazing knowing this one dog's traumatic past in Hurricane Rita or Katrina or whatever hurricane I can't remember and all these other animals with problems. Pets need tender loving care, and sometimes more than that - special treats like massages. I sure hope you can work it out. I have a good feeling about this. You'll know if there's a flow.

Awesome...so inspiring.

My recent attack at work has prompted me to consider starting my own business as well. I love cats so much, and dogs, but I'm more of a cat person...and would love to spend me time giving feline friends tummy rubs, but I'm not sure it would be a very lucrative business.

You would need to cater to rich people with too much money and not enough time or sense. The point of being in business is to make money.
