General Suggestions For My Depression

I'm looking for suggestions on dealing with my depression. I ordered Nutrisystem diet, but I hate the food, so I need to figure out another diet. I know exercise will help, but I just can't seem to get myself off the couch. I'm having trouble sleeping, and the new BP med I'm on gives me nightmares.

I've always had hormonal and seasonal depression, but it's all worse this year because of my ex. I know if I can lose a few lbs and get out more I'd feel better. I just can't seem to get started.

Id appreciate any ideas or suggestions. I have to find a way to get started.

Thanks @Anarchy I will check out the book on YouTube. I called the employee assistance program through my job to set up counseling. First 2 sessions are free and the rest are covered by my insurance. Besides my depression, I've just started on meds for high blood pressure and heart rate. So I figured maybe counseling would help me feel less stress which would help my health. I really am trying.

One of the problems talking about depression is it can cover such a spectrum, from a passing low mood to seriously suicidal. All are called depression, but you can't treat them the same way and a lot of frustration is caused in the seriously depressed by people familiar with the milder end giving advice that is impossible to follow.

It sounds from the little you've shared as though you are somewhere in the middle. Able to take some positive action, like posting on here and setting up counseling, but can't get off the couch to exercise.

I have suffered from depression for most of my life, with ups and downs covering the spectrum. I love the Top 10 list (which I had missed until now - thanks for the link!) but realize that when my depression gets past a certain point, even engaging in my favourite activities won't make me feel better. At that point it is a different level of depression.

If you have reached the level of not being able to get off the couch, I'd definitely say you need counseling. Crossing my fingers for you to find someone you can connect with. There are loads of self-care tricks we can offer, but I'd be concerned that your depression may have gotten to a point where you won't be able to use them until you can take the edge off of what is bothering you. Until then, you may just need to distract yourself as best you can and not blame yourself for the things you are not able to do right now.

IIRC, some of the meds for blood pressure, cholesterol and beta blockers can have adverse effects on mood, If you have the packs they came in, check out those dirty great sheets of small print for the known side effects and contra indications.
